I may as well write this entry about my last days in Miami in Spanish. I am not exaggerating when I say that I think about 75% of people in Miami are Spanish-speaking.
I went to the Vizcaya house and gardens, which is an amazing French-Venetian influenced property on the water of Miami that was constructed in the late 1800's I think. The architecture was impeccable and there were some ideas in design that I had never seen before. For example, there was a stone sculpture out in the water, proximal to the house, that resembled a boat with stone steps and European-style statues adorning it. Pretty amazing s*** cos in the backdrop behind that, in the distance over water, was another island of Miami. I'm not even going to start to describe the other features of the estate, including the garden, exterior and interior design, because there were so many amazing things.
The next night we went to a house party, which was nice because I met some new people. What was much better, however, was what we did the night after that. Demet and I went to a suburb that showcased lots of art along this one particular street. There was maaad graffiti and graffiti-influenced pieces on walls, canvasses, and Combi vans. Other than that, there was a lot of other types of art and REALLY good music. They were even playing Digable Planets and Mobb Deep for those who know the deal. There was even this DJ that was cutting records in the style of Grandmaster Flash, which I really liked cos it was retro.
The next day was an experience and a half. We went to Calle Ocho (8th Street) in Demet's suburb, which is also called Little Havana. s***loads of Cubans and Cuban food. Super awesome. I had the biggest beef skewer I've ever had in my life and a Cuban delicacy made if mashed corn that I have come to love. We even saw a guy make Cuban cigars from scratch with his hands while smoking a Cuban cigar. Ultra cool s***.
I have to say, like last time, it was hard to do farewells with Demet because we get along so well and I have such great times with her. On the other hand, I really appreciated this short time with her and with Miami and I'm glad that I'm so good at having fun.
I'm Mexico City at the moment and I have to thank Miami as a segway into this culture. I have managed well using body language and finding English-speaking people, but it will be good to get to Oaxaca and see Beto.
In summary, Miami was very different to NY, which was an awesome thing.
