Even though i am now home i thought you all needed an update on my final month of travelling so that i can bring my travelling to a close!
I spent four weeks in South africa travelling down the coast from Johannesburg to Cape town. In jo'burg we went on a 4 day safari to Kruger National park, staying in tents for the the first two nights and then a posh private game lodge for the final night! It was great fun and we were lucky to see loads of animals including lions, elephants, giraffes (which i have now fallen i love with - they are so funny looking!), warthogs, hyenas, buffalo, wilderbeast, rhino and crocodiles. We also did a night safari from the game lodge and stopped in the middle of the park to have drinks off a table with a white linen tablecloth and watch the sun go down - all very surreal! i loved it!
We then headed down to durban where i bumped into Piers - a friend from my ski seaon in Meribel last year - i knew he was in south africa but had no idea where and there he was sitting in my dorm - its a very small world! After durban, we headed to cinsta - which is a tiny little place right in the sticks with its own beach, and the backpackers there is said to be the best in South Africa! Well it must have been pretty good cos we ended up staying 6 days! We used it as a mini holiday in the middle of our travels - why do you need a holiday when you're travelling you might ask, but in fact it is nice to just settle in one place for a bit and be able to spill out of your bag and get to know the area you're in, which wasnt hard seeing as Cinsta is tiny! We spent our days sunbathing, walking across the beach and sea to buy food, playing volleyball and going to the bar, but the definiate plus point was going to a primary school for the afternoon where the kids all put on a little concert for us which was incredible!
After Cinsta we moved onto Jefferies bay which is a really nice seaside town - selling cheap billabong clothing and it's known for its incredible waves - so we took advantage of one of those things! From J'Bay, we headed to Hermanus for a day. Hermanus is famous for its whale sightings which give us a clue of what to do for the day - whale watching! and we saw loads! After Hermanus, we headed to Stellenbosch for another day which took us away from the coastline and into vineyard country! So of course, we did a wine tour - and i know for one thing SA wine is incredibly strong! After Stellenbosch we had our final stop - Cape Town!
We spent 5 great days exploring the city and taking in the sites. We took an open-top tour bus around the city (just like proper london tourists - and even stayed up top when it started to spit - we are soo english!) which took us to the castle, museums and the waterfront which is really nice. We took a trip down the Cape Penisular - me driving, eeek! which was great fun - we covered loads of ground in the one day and got to see the huge colony of african penguins on Boulders Beach too and we spent one day wandering the city in search of markets and souvenirs shops, we were in luck! We thought we'd never get up Table Mountain cos there was always cloud covering the top of it even when it was blue sky everywhere else but we finally made it on our final day with our Irish friends which we kept bumping into all the way down SA, and it was definiately worth it - breath-taking views of the city and bay below! And then on 20th September 2006, we boarded our flight home to Heathrow! And that concludes my final entry! xxxx
