charlie's 5 months of fun
I had an amazing week in fiji and could have stayed for a lot longer!
We spent the first night on the mainland in Nadi. We were going to stay in one place and then got persuaded to stay somewhere else because it was supposedly cheaper - it turned out not to be as great as we were told but still better (thankfully)!
The next day we got a ferry to our island - or so we thought - in actual fact we arrived in the harbour and then got into a rickerty long boat to go to our island - malolo and our resort funky fish! When we arrived we didnt quite know what we had got ourselves into - about ten tiny beach huts, a beach, a pool and a larger hut which turned out to be our dorm! but as the days went on, it turned out to be the most incredible and idyllic experience! the owners (the husband of which used to be a NZ all black in the 70s - brad johnson!) welcomed us with open arms (literally) and we felt very much at home immediatly! Our days there were spent sunbathing, playing volleyball with the fijian staff - very nosy!!!, snorking off a sandbank in the middle of the sea (bizarre experience), doing a trek which took us 2 and half hours and took us to the highest point on the island so we could see the whole island and all the coral reefs surrounding it! We took part in a Kava cermony which is the fijian tradional drink and is used to make peace - it didnt taste too bad - a bit like dirty water - it is supposed to make you feel very relaxed - all it managed to do to me was make me tongue go numb! We also met some great people on the island including two swedes and an aussie family - it was very easy to make friends seeing as there were only about 20 people in the resort at any one time including the 7ish staff! Towards the end of our stay we got a little obsessed playing rummikub with our new aussie friend - an obsession that my mum will appreciate! haha!
Our last afternoon was spent kayaking on the ocean!...or at least that is what we had planned - it actually ended up being us kayaking out into the sea, getting caught up in wind and current that was way to strong for us so that we were drifting further and further away from funky fish (earlier brad had pointed out that there was no coastguard!!) so that we ended up getting out of the boat and walking in knee-deep water to the shore and then dragging the unbelievably heavy boat along the sand and through gross seaweedy water where we finally reached our resort 3/4 of an hour later soaked through and completely knackered!! not quite the kayaking we'd intended- maybe we should have listened to our sea-knowledgable auusie friend who was just there to laugh at us as we struggled into the resort!!
We had the most amazing time on the whole, made some great friends and certainly didnt want to leave - especially when we had a cold New Zealand to look forward to.....xxxx
