Hue is another UNESCO world heritage site as it was once the capital of Vietnam. It also has the best Vietnamese food we've eaten all trip! Here are a few of our favs:
Make your own rice paper rolls filled with salad, starfruit, green banana and pork skewer dipped in peanut sauce called banh thit nuang.
Rice flour fried pancake flavoured with turmeric filled with bean sprouts, shrimp and salad called banh khaoi.
Steamed rice noodle pieces covered in dried shrimp and dipped in fish sauce called banh beo.
The first day we took a tour as we wanted an English speaking guide for the 3 kings mausoleums. All three were very grand, extremely different and it was a very interesting day hearing about the different kings and their lives. We then took a dragon boat down the Perfume River to the most famous pagoda with it's many roofs and tall structure.
The next day we visited the ancient walled city across the river where the King's once lived. Unfortunately a lot of it was bombed in the war but it had been faithfully restored in many areas, especially the main palace. After we had lunch at a restaurant (Lac Thien) owned by an amazing family who are deaf and mute, and therefore speak in sign language. Their food was incredible and the owner gave Oli the most ingenious bottle opener made of a piece of wood, a bolt and 2 screws with the date written on it. It turns out this gift is to be taken around the world and we are to send a picture of us opening a beer with it!
That evening we made our way to Hue airport to fly to Hanoi. Only 10 dollars more each to fly rather than getting the bus!
