Week 18- Australia (Port Macquarie) Day 6
Today was our first and only full day in Port Macquarie so we wanted to make the most of it. Although we still managed to get in a cheeky lay in! Gemma has been quite ill with the flu the past few days so she definitely needed some rest.. We are constantly on the move! We had breakfast and showered ready for the day.
We had planned to do a 3 hour coastal walk but we weren't up in time so we decided to walk along to the beach and just wonder for a bit down the coastal path. It was such a beautiful walk, the sea was so blue and very picturesque. We then strolled back to the hostel as we wanted to book the sunset cruise for later on today. We had some lunch and chilled out with the other backpackers.
The main thing we wanted to see in Port Macquarie was the koala hospital and we were both SO excited. It was also free for a tour and to see feeding which was a bonus! They were all really cute and fluffy! We walked around listening to the stories about them and why they had been admitted into the hospital.
One koala was getting quite old and had a limp in his leg. He was found on the side of the road. When a koala is first brought in they are chipped so if they are brought in again and they can see their history. Also if a koala is found and a member of the public rings them up they have to go and collect the koala and even if they look healthy they have to bring them back to the hospital for a full examination. Well.. This one koala with the limp kept being brought into the hospital a numerous of times. Members of the public kept finding him on the edge of the road in the same place. The hospital would go and find him and confirm it was the same koala but because of their policies they had to bring him back for examination each time. They decided that he was a clever koala and worked out that if he sat at the edge of the road someone would call the hospital and he would have a nice few days being looked after. This happened so many times now and he is getting quite old they have decided to make him a permanent resident of the koala hospital, so now he gets nice big fresh leaves without evening moving! Bless him!
We raced off in a cab from the koala hospital to the jetty as we wanted to catch the $10 sunset cruise! We got there just in time and we were hoping to see some dolphins! The boat was full of an OAP group and they were playing Elvis Presley, it was rather entertaining! Sadly we didn't see any dolphins but they sunset was beautiful! It was a lovely way to end our day! Once back at the hostel we made a yummy Thai curry and relaxed with all the other backpackers.
