We spent a lot of the day chilling and went to watch the united match as it was raining. We had been told that though they started parading at 10 we had no seating allocated so to get in as soon as the doors opened at 6pm. It was meant to last until 5am - as we were leaving the next day we tried to pack and nap.
When we got there it was incredible. It was so long that even after they started it took 15 mins to dance up to us. These were the first 6 of the special groups, the second the next day. We were above the judges so perfect place - they always saved the best dances and surprises for them.
There was always a coordinated themed dance at the start with what we called a stealth float - some changed around, one had a human parrot in, one revealed a woman who was apparently the most famous singer in Brazil, one had a walking disco ball inside, hard to explain but they were all amazing. The theme continued as all the hundreds of people walking in costume came by, interspersed with massive amazing floats. We heard that there were 3-5000 people in each parade. Each school had its own song which people sang along to, and although there were one or two samba dancers interspersed with the floats and costumed people there was always in the middle a big group of samba dancers with their big group of drummers. There were usually about six floats.
It was literally incredible, it must have cost a fortune they were so amazing - see pics! I danced my way through. The only problem was the rain, it rained through the first one but luckily stopped by the second. I thought they'd purposely delayed starting for that, we found out later one of the first floats had crashed at an end and injured some people...
It did mean that we didn't leave until 6, and that was still in the middle of the last one, as our transfer was collecting us at 11!
Absolutely incredible.
