hi everyone!!
Well, we successfully managed to negotiate to the Thai/cambodian border! After hearing a huge number of horror stories on the internet and worrying a lot the night before we decided to just go for it and left our lovely room in Bangkok at 5 to get to the bus terminal. Our "1st class" bus journey was relatively painless and we finally arrived at the border after catching a tuk tuk. It proceeded to rain mercilessly and we got thoroughly drenched, followed by scammed by the Cambodian Border officials for our Visa. trying to charge us $25 instead of $20, we basically refused and they told us where to go, so we settled on 100baht each, saving ourselves a grand total of $4! So finally we got through to the dump that is Poipet, its basically like the Las Vegas of Cambodia. We manged to share a taxi with two other english people who were waiting at the bus terminal (it is basically the only way to get to Siem Reap) which was a bit of relief. So we arrived safely in Siem Reap, found a great hotel with the help of our tuk tuk driver. Because it is low season here (which means its about 40 degrees, humid and rains a bit) we got a great deal with much needed air con and a great shower!
Anyway, border tales over, Siem Reap is amazing! Bangkok was a touch too stinky and too full of con artists (although we had some great Pad Thai on the street for about 40p...dont worry Mum, no meat just egg, noodles and veg! hehehe) but here there are loads of amazing restaurants and the people seem to be a lot nicer and not so persistent! The food is incredible, we sampled some Khmer curry last night (chicken with coconut milk, green beans, onion and carrot) with the all important Jasmine sticky rice! We decided it was very like your Thai curry mum! (and Janice!)Cant wait to try more food!!! (shocking i know)
We are heading to Angkor Wat tomorrow to explore the temples and watch the sunrise, so a nice early start for us!
Didn't bring my usb with me today Nan but will try and put photos up asap. We are both washing a lot so don't worry! Although at one stage during the safari Spence did manage not to wash for quite a while! Lets just say, his hat didn't smell good!! hehehehe.
Hope your all ok, miss you lots
Spence and Charlie xxx
