Monday was supposed to be a Greek Island tour on a private boat with the newlyweds, their friends and family. But then the forecast for a ton of rain came in. And the company postponed the trip to Tuesday. When we were flying back to Germany. BOO!!!!
So, with our newly found free time, and due to Mike's life goal of having a gyro in Greece, we decided to head the other way down the coast to Nidri for lunch and a little souvenir shopping. Little did we know Nidri was basically just a couple of minutes in the other direction from the bottom of our hill!!
Unfortunately, we must have hit at just the right moment for NIGHTMARISH traffic through Nidri. We had plugged in a place that was highly rated on Trip Advisor for both the food and the prices, and it turned out to be on the further end of the road. And the streets were JAMMED with people walking, biking and driving. Greek drivers are nutso. Completely. So after a very stressful drive we parked where we could and headed to Stathis Place where we did get A LOT of delicious food for a very low total price. Totally lived up to the reviews! Mike was VERY happy with his gyro. And our waiter was fabulous and so nice.
And as a "something I learned today" - lamb in gyros? Totally not Greek. Apparently the Greeks that moved to Chicago are the ones that started that. In Greece, most gyros are pork. Sometimes chicken. Mike sampled both. :)
We then walked up and down just a couple of blocks of the main drag and found some nice shops to buy some things in. Just leaving some money behind to help out that Greek economy. :)
We then returned back to the house by late afternoon, spent a little more time outside and had a quick visit from Evie, Kosta and Yianna before they headed out to dinner with friends. (Even a 9 pm dinner invite was a little much when we had to be up at 6 am to head to the airport!) So, a quick dinner and then a lot of packing and early to bed.
Tuesday we were up early, out of the house by 7:15, and to the airport by about 8. Rental car return was smooth, the airport has a whopping four gates, so check in and everything was quick.
Thank you for a wonderful week, Greece! We hope to return!!
