NYC to Mexico -
We flew in to Cancun and took a boat straight over to Isla Mujeres, a small island half an hour away from cancun. We had arrived in mexico... The land of the fabulous tacos! We hadn't booked any accommodation and the lessons in espanol needed to kick in. The sun was shining and the water looked amazing. We arrived and hiked about the little town to find accommodation. We found a perfect place right on the beach for about $45 a night. (posada del mar) It was located on the best beach on the island in the north. We literally walked out of our hotel onto sand to beach front bars with swings, white sands, blue waters.... Blah blah - postcard stuff it was indeed!
We hired a little moped while we were there and hooned around the island. No mishaps on the bike, I got a little disorientated with the breaks and the accelerator, which is not a great thing when a big rock is in front of you. After this incident, i rightly passed all driving duties to chad and realised that men are much better drivers than women All good though, no issues. Riding on the moped was a little deceptive, with the cool breeze, we didn't realize how hot the sun was and we got burnt. My poor whitey skin from Aussie winter didn't like it much at all. We both had very attractive winglets tans for quite some time after that. We also visited a small turtle farm which was quite fun, lots of baby turtles and some white turtles which looked like white chocolate. Tempting as it was, we resisted eating them.
After Isla Mujeres we headed back to Cancun to travel down to meet up with Amelia to spend some time out at Cozumel island, which is one hour by boat from playa del Carmen (also near Cancun) Cozumel was nice on one side of the island. It's a popular place for big cruises to stop - which means at any given time there's a whole heap of drunk Americans around. I won't make any comment in regards to this, but you can make assumptions if you like! We hired a car here and were able to get away from the popular hub area and headed out to the "wild side" of the island which had lots of great volcanic rock pools and beachfront bars to explore. Unfortunately on the second day we were there it starting raining. A hurricane on the pacific coast of mexico was sharing some of it's leftover rain and wind with us, but We still made the most of out time in Cozumel. After Cozumel our next stop was Playa Del Carmen on the main land.... Still raining and very windy :-( Most of our time there revolved around tacos, cards and drinks! We even made a trip to the local shopping mall to see the new jason stratham and bobby deniro film to escape the tropical downpour.
Amy wasnt feeling particularly well so one night chad and i headed out to get her some takeaway tacos, but we got a little stranded in torrential rain before we were able to return to the hotel with the tacos and had no other choice but to spend the next hour or so in local mexican bar when a local ushered us in. Had a chat to a few locals, got served some very potent drinks, and discussed the various genre's and dancing styles of Mexican music. Chad was loving this conversation, and had he been a little drunker, probably would have danced with our new amigos to celebrate. We then had to go buy Amy some more tacos (we ate hers at the bar) and run back to the hotel in water up to ankles, god bless havaianas in these situations!
Also headed out to Tulum for the day to check out some amazing ruins right on the beach. The rain just stopped enough for us to walk around it. Didn't stay particular dry that day though but had a lot of fun. Also did an inspection of the town area on our last night and the nightclub area was flooded in about 40cm of water....
Looking ahead the weather report isn't looking fabulous but it keeps changing daily so fingers crossed, said our goodbyes to Amelia this morning and we are heading to Belize... One last taco stop in Chetumal, border town before arriving in Belize by water taxi ...Until next time... Adios Amigos. Edwina.
