Ceri's Big Adventure!
We left the North Island at 3 am tues 14th Feb on the ferry and got to the south island at about 6am absolutely knackered then drove for 3 hours to the campsite with Anna and Claire asleep. We arrived though just as the sun was rising, the first part of the journey was along the coast and the views were amazing I have put a picture up of marlborough sounds at sunrise on my photo album. Will try and put more on soon but lots of internet cafes wont let you upload photos.
MOTUEKA - Abel Tasman National Park
We met up with Mary and John again here and went Sea Kayaking along the coast of the National park, the water is so blue and there are tiny little coves and mini sandy beaches we stopped at a few it was really tropical looking as I have probably said loads there were amazing views all the way along. We kayaked for about 2 and a half hours, my arms ached quite a bit after this, but it was well worth it. We said goodbye to Mary and John after 2 days and headed our seperate ways which was a bit sad. Anna wont see them again for about a year or so!! We headed on to Kaikoura.
KAIKOURA
Here we went on a whale watching tour, We saw 4 huge huge Sperm Whales and loads of Dusky Dolphins that loved the boat they just swam around jumping out and doing flips around the boat for ages. Got a few pictures of the whale tail as it dived back down under water. This trip was better than the one in Bali because the dolphins come so much closer in Bali the trip was spent mostly chasing the Dolphins as they kept swimming away. We moved on towards the rocks to see loads of NZ fur seals lounging on the rocks just managing to lift their heads to see what was going on before flopping back down again.
Bali seems like a distant memory now, glad I took loads of photos!!
Kaikoura is a very small touristy town smaller than Appledore probably, but very nice. We went out for a drink one night after a few hours these blokes strated talking to us, locals and very strange (again much like Appledore, he he he) there was one our age small and skinny wearing a rather nice beard, he had moved from the country to there because he wanted to be a trucker, and he also loved country music????? the other two were slightly more normal but not much. They kept trying to invite us out for dinner the next night and wouldnt take no for an answer so when we left the pub we ran back to the campsite so they couldnt follow us and see where we were staying. Thank goodness we didnt see them again.
When we left Kaikoura we headed for Arthurs pass, this route takes you through the mountainsfrom the east to the west coast, It took us all day to drive it, Claire and Anna are doing more driving now thank goodness I get to loojk at some of the views, however I did fear for my life at one time when Anna was driving and screeched around a corner on the edge of the cliff aahhhh. Oh and I forgot to say Claires first turn on driving on the way to Kaikoura she was doing really well until we got stopped by the police, we all sat there waiting for him to come up to the van petrified We havent been over the speed limit at all partly coz of all the hills you couldnt even if you wanted to. Anyway it was only because Anna wasn't wearing her seatbelt correctly, she put it right across her shoulder not under her arm and then we had a long lecture about the safety of seatbelts and the description of a recent crash where the girl had a lapbelt on which are not as safe and she basically had to be pieced back together. I was in the middle at this point wearing a lap belt!! We promised we would wear them properly and off we went.
Arthers pass is a beautiful route and definatly worth the jouney we didnt stop here but carried on to a town called Hokitika.
