Friday or Sat eve After dinner - Walk out of the hostel carp park and turn left. Follow the land (approx. 1km) all the way down to Gordale Scar (Collapsed cavern- would have looked like Gaping Gill). Walk through the middle of the campsite and round the corner to Gordale Scar. Walk back, past campsite there is a clump of trees - go down the footpath to Janet's Foss Waterfall and plunge pool. Students can take this opportunity to go swimming.
Saturday
From Malham Back track to Settle and then on to Austwick (approx. 30mins from Settle). Go to the top of the village and turn left up hill on very tiny lane (very steep hill and problems parking). Park as soon as the houses run out and walk. On the left there will be a tiny lane (2 gates opposite). At the T-junction there is as style and sign. Follow the footpath - you will see the Norber Erratics and hill in front in area called Thwaite (hundreds of erratics) (GR 7669). The Silurian Sandstone erratics originated from Crummack Dale, approx. 5km away and were transported by ice.
Have a break up here for 20 mins. Then go back to buses. Travel North- Take road to Helwin Bridge, turn right on to B6479 to Ribble Head Viaduct. On towards Hawes.
Head to Hawes for lunch, where students will need to carry out all data collection (groups of 5-6, and they can split themselves to half workload). 12pm-1.30pm. Students can spend 10-15mins in National Park Information Centre (near to Rope Museum).
Travel to Hardraw. Park in the village, and walk through the pub entrance (need to pay inside) and walk approx. 20min to Hardraw Force (where Robin Hood showered naked in the film) - 1hr in total for this.
Go East to Bainbridge, and then South West to Semewater (Created by glacial deposits when Raydale tributary glacier melted and was blocked by Wensleydale Glacier). River Bain here is the smallest in England. (1hr total)
At Bainbridge there will be opportunity for a toilet stop (situated off the Village Green), and when standing on the bridge you can see classic examples of how the river down cuts in to the limestone.
Aysgarth Falls - Turn left into the village. There is a white building (Café/restaurant), and then the car park. You have to pay for parking in the coffee shop. If we get to the church we have gone too far. Walk down the hill, and from the bridge you can see the waterfalls. Take the signpost for the middle falls (to the left), and past the picnic benches (This is where Robin Hood and Little John fought in the film).
To get back to Malham, Go via Kettlewell and then view Kilnsey Crag (Overhang and undercutting GR9768). Then take the road that goes up the side of the River Skirfare to Arncliffe (Superb scenery), and then the tiny steep road back to Malham.
Saturday evening - Students to spend 1 hour in Malham doing data collection. Students to given boundaries within Malham of Youth Hostel, campsite, and car park so they don't venture too far.
Sunday
Pack up bags and buses to leave by 9. Give students 20mins at National Park Information Centre.
Walk from the Youth Hostel Car Park and turn left. After 100m turn left and follow the road signposted Malham Tarn (1.2km). Turn left at open crossroads for approx. 400m. Stop for lunch on the right hand side in view of the tarn (Malham Tarn situated on Slate and sealed with glacial till).
Follow the stream back - disappearing stream at Water Sinks. Walk through the valley to Comb Scar. If dry, stop and get students to do a field sketch. At the top of the valley, go through the gate/style - easy to follow yellow footpath. Follow the valley, which will open out on to Limestone Pavement - the exit is to the right, with steps going down to the bottom to resurgence stream (Path goes round to the right but need to go under the cliff to see water coming out - students can paddle if they want). Walk back to buses. Well signposted as Pennine Way.
