North Island, New Zealand
Well since Ceri left over a week ago now I thought I better start jotting a few things down, just so you know I haven't quite disappeared off the face of the earth yet.. Ceri left from Auckland last Wednesday after a pritty mad 2 weeks to say the least on the road travelling North Island/ skiing etc. etc. Our final few days together consisted of a night staying over at Mt Manganui in a brilliant spot overlooking right out over the sea (and eating fish and chips on the beach as the sunset)! We then had a day travelling by the coast up to the Coromandel and Hot Water Beach, finally arriving in Auckland on the Tuesday night. The beach being a pretty serial but amazing experience; digging in the sand and burning our feet in the boiling hot water in comparison to the freezing cold sea. On our final day together we firstly said our goodbyes to our camper van Freddy (sad times).. he served us well :(, lol.. then we headed to sky tower, where for some strange, very crazy reason (must have been Ceri's influence.. :)), I decided to throw myself off the sky tower (the tallest free-standing structure in the southern hemisphere) not once but twice!?- I have absolutely no idea what came over me but it was pretty awesome. After a quick spot of high tea (literally..) in the sky tower we said our goodbyes and Ceri (after giving me an absolutely gorgeous good-bye kiwi necklace and t-shirt- thank you soo much again dude :)!!) headed to the airport whilst I headed for a bus back towards my new home from home, the big city of Morrinsville :)..
After arriving into Hamilton late afternoon PJ very kindly picked me up from the bus station and drove me back to le ville. Had a pretty quiet day on Thursday, just really caught up with everyone and started to get sorted for my first day of work experience at the Vet Clinic on Friday. Although very different from my previous 2 weeks of work experience at the Animal Health Centre, I had a really good very interesting first day at the Vet Clinic. On Friday night, although on call over the weekend I felt I needed to drown my sorrows of missing graduation so went down to the pub for a few drinks; surprisingly enough this didn't turn out to be such a good idea after an early morning wakeup call at 7 on Saturday morning which lead to a pretty much full day of calving, prolapsed uteruses and down cows, in-between going to watch my second proper kiwi rugby match in which PJ was playing (typically absolutely pouring down of course.. wouldn't be the same without the rain).
On Saturday night I received an education in New Zealand culture in the form of watching two pretty thought provoking films; Once Were Warriorsand What Becomes of the Broken Hearted?, both NZ made, oh and not forgetting the expertly made butter chicken and rice ;). On Sunday it was pretty much another day of on-call including a pretty epic caesarean, and then back to work on Monday morning, which is where I've been for the majority of this week, seeing a mixture of inductions, calvings, some interesting small animal ops and the odd sick cow. Oh and just to keep sane.. attended the usual weekly young farmers meeting (aka drinking session) on Monday night. Although this meeting was pretty civilised after my first New Zealand young farmers experience consisted of a night out ('meeting') to basically arrange another night out, oh and of course to discuss the serious matter of the pre-calving weigh in.. In-between this and not to forget the paper airplane making/ flying competition across the pub.. - nice to know no matter how far you travel around the world some things just never change.. :).
Yesterday we set off to Rotorua (via Cambridge), once again just like leaving for Taupo the last time it was actually pretty sad leaving Morrinsville behind again- grown pretty fond of the little town over the past few weeks/ month.. Does really seem like a new home from home. Stayed in Rotorua last night and then over to Taupo 2day (where I'm currently camping out for the night) with the plan of catching/ joining the kiwi experience bus tomorrow morning in quest to head for South Island this weekend.. So the adventure continues :)..!! Hope ur all well back in the UK and hope to speak to you all again soon!
Lots of lovin Caroline Xxx.
