I finally managed to escape my own personal episode of 'Lost'! I was sucked into the tropical island for two weeks where 'the others' (westeners who'd slipped into a timeless existence there) tried to brainwash you into their bubble of indifference and instead of polar bears and scary dust clouds I had to survive things like free buckets of alcohol and shots that tasted like liquid death. Fortunately I managed to escape with my dignity in tact - having not fallen asleep on the beach at 3am or getting so drunk that a giant skipping rope doused in petrol and set on fire looked inviting to play with. Phi Phi kind of reminded me of uni a little, but a crazy multi-national uni where the students had taken over, moved to a gorgeous tropical setting and given up pretending that anyone was there to do any kind of studying.
After a detox session which consisted of negotiated my way up to Bangkok and into CAmbodia (avoiding any major political incidents) I treated myself with a huge dose of culture at Angkor Wat that involved getting up at 4am to see the sunrise there. The whole place was absolutely stunning and kind of indescribable...it was like being in a Tomb Raider movie set. Coincidentally, the Hollywood movie producers thought so too as they actually filmed Tomb Radier there.
I found Pan again when I moved onto the coast and we tired to relax on the beach despite being harrased by cheeky Cambodian girls who learnt way too many bad words at English School. They developed an appetite for teasing Pan in between trying to sell us things which provided an entertaining combination of insecure flirting, outright bullying and occasional death threats. I'm sorry to say he succmbed to a couple of pedicures and more overpriced bracelets than any self-respecting boy needs.
The rest of Cambodia was a little more sinister and included some eye-opening history lessons i.e. The Killing Fields with stories of babies being smashed against trees and people being buried alive in mass graves. Other highlights of the capital included a memorable trip to a club called the Heart of Darkness and waking up to offerings of a variety of class A's by the guesthouse before they even showed us a breakfast menu!
I'm now catching up with Pt for a high octane weekend in HK and if my last trip is anything to go by I wont have time to even catch my breath until i'm back in the airport...eeek
