Start of Contiki
Shortly after we left Las Vegas, Nevada we passed through a security check point into the sunshine state, California!!
While road tripping we passed a town called Baker. Baker has the world's largest thermometer. It read 87 degrees Fahrenheit, about 31 degrees Celsius as we passed. Just after Baker, California we passed along the edge of Death Valley. The name suggests it all, pure sand dune desert. We stopped for lunch in Barstow, where we had "In & Out" for lunch. "In & Out" is a burger chain that prides itself on making the burgers and fries fresh from never frozen products. You wait a little bit but the burgers are flame grilled and yum! After Barstow we had a quick pit stop in Bakersfield and then continued through to beautiful Bass Lake.
At Bass Lake we stayed in lake side quad share cabins, but we each had our own double bed. We shared with a couple of other girls from Contiki. The cabins were great and the setting perfect. There were lots of American families spending their summer vacation. Contiki provided us with a Pizza and salad dinner, which we had in the sunshine by the pool.
Thursday 12 August 2010:
Today we took a bus trip into the incredible Yosemite National Park. We took the winding roads into the valley below where we had four hours to explore. The cliff faces tower hundreds of feet above you with waterfalls trickling down them and you realise just how small you are in this big, big world. The park was absolutely majestic!! It is considered the second best National Park in the USA with Yellowstone National Park being the best. Steph and I hired a couple of bikes and peddled the length of the valley. We saw a few hundred squirrels, a doe and a racoon. Unfortunately, or rather fortunately, we didn't see a black bear. We also visited the Ansell Adams gallery and marvelled at his black and white photographs of Yosemite National Park.
Once back at Bass Lake we relaxed around the lake soaking up the last of the day's sunshine before our BBQ dinner.
Heading to San Francisco tomorrow! Whoohooo!
