WED 4th OCT 2006 - Penang to Bangkok (start of Team Thailand)
We finally managed to communicate to the lady in the hostel that we didn't want chicken nuggets and veg for breakfast, and that tea and toast would suffice.
Arrived at Penang airport to discover that, surprise surprise, our rucksacks were too heavy. We had to repack our bags in the middle of the airport - so everyone got an eyeful of our dirty washing.
Successfully found Rebecca at Bangkok airport, who arrived with a welcome supply of Heat magazine, OK and big bag of Minstrels (meal number 2 for the day). The oh-so "new" airport in Bangkok does not yet have transport links to the city so had to taxi it to our hotel.
Treated ourselves (again) to a lovely 18th floor hotel in China Town. Free slippers, dressing gown and jet powered shower that was as big as our hostel room was in KL. Bliss!
Had a lovely chinese for dinner, where entertainment was provided by Miss Curran chasing spring onions around her dish with chop sticks. Before giving up and shovelling the remains of her food into her mouth with the huge serving spoon it came with.
Jen then trashed the beautiful bathroom in the hotel (thankfully the shower escaped unharmed) by smashing a bottle on the floor. Thank god for housekeeping and their hoovering ability at midnight!
THURS 5th OCT 2006 - Bangkok (start of Becca's Bootcamp)
Oh what a day!!! Where do we begin - it was hell!!!!!!!!
We fell for the oldest tricks in the book of the conmen - We believed the Grand Palace was closed until 1pm cos the King and Queen were visiting (how stupid of us!). Getting there was our one and only aim of the day. Instead a not so genuine tuk-tuk man took us to what must be every Temple in Bangkok until the Palace was due to open. All his mates were the "ticket vendors" at the temples (no commission there I'm sure), and simply left us Buddha'd to the max - sitting Buddha, standing Buddha, 46m reclining Buddha (at Wat Po) and Buddha's doing headstands. Where does it all end? Not at the Grand Palace that's for sure - it was closed when we finally got there. It really was closed this time,
Very bad day! Had tea at the hotel cos we now hate all of Bangkok.
FRI 6th OCT 2006
Had gorgeous breakfast again at our hotel. Not satisfied with trashing the hotel room, Jen then tried to burn down the hotel by warming/setting fire to her croissant on the toaster.
Pat on the back for planning as we sorted our route around Thailand without the help of conmen.
Avoided the tuk-tuk men and went on sky-train and taxi boat to the Grand Palace. YAAAAAAAAAY! Impressed by the Emerald Buddha and all his gold.
Thailand Team effort for helping Jen pack Bertha much more efficiently.
Got our glad rags on and digged out the GHD's for night out Bangkok style. Parents - stop reading now!
Craving a bit of western food we had pizza and garlic bread at amazing night bazaar - plenty of shopping planned for on the way back now. Then thought we'd give in to the curiosity we had about Patpong - On reflection, ignorance is bliss!
