Hello from Delhi!
So we're here alive and kicking! Had a good flight over from England which included extra leg room - Katie virtually had a bed! However sitting on the plane, we were worried that we'd misjudged the weather...Everyone else pilled on wearing thick winter coats, gloves and hats. For us though, it's really warm! We're walking a round in t shirts where as the locals are wearing wooly hats!
Delhi airport lived up to its reputation - it really was chaos. It took nearly an hour to get through passport control, with many people then being sent back to fill in another form (which they didn't even collect in) before rejoining the queue... Once we'd cleared immigration and collected our backpacks, we went though to meet the G Adventures rep, who informed us that the prebooked taxi had left, so he put us into a local taxi instead (very dodgie looking, with only one wing mirror!) Driving in Delhi is as crazy as everyone says, but also amazing accurate - they squeeze their cars through the tiniest gaps with no concern but plenty of horn blaring! Wing mirrors are tucked in accessories, lanes aren't used and indicting in non-existent. For Katie, this is fairly similar to Sri Lanka and Bangkok, but for Catherine it was definitely a new experience.
It came clear as we got closer to Karol Bagh, that our driver wasn't entirely sure where our hotel was... After stopping and asking numerous people, finding ourselves the locals latest attraction and nearly losing our booking confirmation we eventually arrived, and Hotel Perfect is (almost) perfect. After catching a few winks we headed up to our hotels restaurant which was lovely! Sat on the rooftop surrounded by fairy lights and Indian furnishings, we ordered our first veggie curry which was so so yummy (and so cheap - each big dish costs £1 which is more than enough to share). There seems to be so much choice of flavours we may not even get bored of vegetable curry... Although there seems to be some gammy looking cheese in literally everything! Following dinner we decided to use the night to try and get over our jet lag. Not sure this entirely worked as we didn't wake up till 11 am this morning but we're definitely no longer tired! Today we explored Karol Bagh a bit and made our first purchase of 100% pure silk scarves - just so beautiful! Tomorrow we're going to be even more adventurous and use the metro system to get to Humayans tomb... Wish us luck - we may need it!
