After the thunder and lightning last night, the skies were overcast and the ground was VERY wet. We packed up and were on the road at 8am. We chose to take the shortest route to Lajitas, which is not always the smartest choice. Siri had us going down a country road. We saw signs warning of severe flooding and one that stated, "Don't Drown, Turn Around!!"The next sign said "Heed Warning if Light is Blinking"...Lucky for us, the light was not blinking and a big truck was heading our way, 'cause there was no place to turn around.
Along Highway 285, it was very evident we were in oil country. The countryside on either side were dotted with Pump Jacks, those mechanisms that mimic the the Drinking Bird Toy.
As we made our way south, the landscape dramatically changed. Mountains, Mesas, deep valleys became the norm. We passed through Alpine Texas, home to Sul Ross University. We stopped and fueled our vehicles in Ternlingua...just in case. Somehow, Siri had us on another dirt road. A nice Texas Ranger stopped and got us straightened out and turned around in the right direction.
We arrived at the Maverick RV Park and the first questions were..."Where is the Golf Course?" and "Where is the pool?" After settling in our spaces, Walt and I went to check out the golf course and tee times. We have our priorities straight.
Social Bob was at the pool getting information where to eat and what there is to see from folks that winter here. Right now, there is hardly anyone in the RV Park, but they are due to flock in first part of October.
Walt and Barb rustled up some BBQ steaks, veggies, salad and a cooling bit of caramel gelato. After dinner, we were sitting conversing and noticed these beautiful thunder clouds just behind El Capitan. Then, a few glimpses of lightning, then more lightning...no sound thank goodness. That meant we weren't within striking distance.
Then, the light show began. We have never seen anything like it before. It lasted for over an hour. Bolts of lightning, brilliant bursts of light shooting out from behind the clouds. It was as if Zeus was really pissed about something.
We shall see what tomorrow brings here in Lajitas Texas.
