20C Cool & Showers
It's Sunday and we're up and off early to visit the Hamburg Fischmarkt. This is a market that begins at 5am and goes until 9.30am and is a must for all visitors and an institution for all residents of Hamburg. Unfortunately the weather was a bit damp and cool but that did not deter us from checking out a lot of the stalls and purchasing a couple of the local delicacies - fish sandwiches (Fischbrotchen for breakfast anyone?). Anyone from home would call it a fish burger but there is a huge variety available. We took the safe option and selected a crumbed cooked fish burger and a Salmon burger, however you could have had kippers, marinated raw herring, shrimp, eel or many types of smoked fish, but they did not appeal at 7.30 a.m. on a cold wet Sunday morning.
The markets are also full of coffee outlets, bakeries, and souvenir tourist tee-shirts, beer steins and other trinkets of Hamburg. The crowds were thick and we found a band playing inside the Fischmarkt building which was full of tables and mostly stalls serving beer!
The morning has brought drizzling rain with the occasional break but on our return from the markets we decided not to head out until it clears up. By lunch time it was looking better and we took the train to Kunsthalle which is the city art gallery only to find it is closed during July (middle of peak tourist season) for renovations.
So instead, we visit the Hamburg History Museum which has some excellent exhibitions on the growth of Hamburg as well as the history of the shipping and trade industry which has shaped Hamburg. As most of the exhibits are in German it was good that they provided us with audio guides in English which kept us entertained for some time.
Tonight is the final of the World Cup Soccer between Germany and Argentina and we are expecting all restaurants will be packed if they have a TV showing the game. We went down our street for dinner around 7.30 and settled in at an Italian restaurant.
The pre-match entertainment on TV in the restaurant is in full swing. Fortunately, we made it home before the match starts, and as usual with soccer, it takes a long time for anyone to score. Germany is finally declared the winner after scoring 1 goal after 120 minutes of play and the locals start tooting their car horns, ship horns, bells and setting off fireworks around 11.30 p.m.
Fortunately, steady rain outside keeps the noise to a minimum and Tarina gets a good night's sleep unlike her experience back in Frankfurt when Germany won its first game of the tournament. Well done Germany - 24 years since the last world cup win.

Christof Well done, but still a bit late for the fish market, next time you need Greg to be there at 5 or 6am ;) .... my preferred choice on a cold rainy (typical) German morning would be a Backfisch Broetchen. Oh yes,....we are still missing a report about the different Curry Wurst places.. ;) Here are some proposals: - Curry Grindel Rentzelstrasse 2, 20146 Hamburg - Curry Queen Erikastr. 50, 20251 Hamburg - Kiez Curry Querstraße 2, 20359 Hamburg - EDELCURRY - it is a Restaurant not really fast food! Große Bleichen 68, 20354 Hamburg
