Yesterday was such an amazing day!
In the morning I went with Ivor (from Love Volunteers) and the Pastor to one of the Church programmes out in the countryside where they have created a safe environment for children who have been abused or mistreated to play, keeping them off the streets and out of danger. They are such lovely children! They were really curious to see a white person and all wanted to shake my hand or climb on me. We played lots of games and sang songs, I tried my best but they weren't always in English. I am going back there next Saturday.
Then in the afternoon Ivor took me to see Victoria Falls. It is the most incredible thing I've ever seen, it's so much bigger than you can imagine. You have to wear a raincoat because of all the spray and the spray creates amazing rainbows everywhere, the noise it makes is incredible. I just can't do it justice and neither can the photos! We walked through the rainforest and down to the Zambezi River at the base of the Falls and saw wild monkeys on the way that wanted to steal food. Then we climbed to the top and dipped our feet in the river near the edge of the Falls. There were actually some crazy men walking across the river!!
Last night I went to a few bars and a club with Ivor and a man called Roberto we met. It was so surreal, not like nights out at home. All the men dance, women don't really dance here and there was a mirrored wall at the back of the dancefloor at all these places, the men just danced facing it, not having a sneaky glance in the mirror, they actually watched themselves dance the whole time! And I didn't know at the time but every single woman there was selling themselves! It's how they make a living, no Zambian woman goes to places like that, prostitutes from Zimbabwe go there and men pay them about $2 to go home with them, it's mad! Not just one or two women in there, everyone! Luckily with my floor length skirt and sunburnt skin no-one thought I could be bought!!
This morning I went to an Anglican mass, where the Pastor from the programme yesterday preaches. Everyone sang and clapped and even the priest was dancing!! They made me go to the front and introduce myself at the end.
Tomorrow I'm starting at the Orphanage at 8am.
I will try my best to upload these photos, the computers here are so slow and don't have the right software but I really want you to see them. I have taken so many already.
I hope everyone at home is well. Lots of love xxxxx
