Big day today - Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City and the Great Wall. We set off with as many layers of clothes that we could stuff under our jackets after learning our lesson yesterday. Nice and toasty today! Started in Tiananmen Square which apparently is the largest city square in the world. The Forbidden City was just a short walk from the square. Very interesting learning how the city was used and closed to all of the common people until the early 20th century. And now it's full of foreigners!
Big drive to the Great Wall via the obligatory jade shop where they tried to sell us things like a jade Buddha less than 10cm tall for AUD110! The walk up the Wall was spectacular if not hard work! The wall was VERY steep in places and tested Case's fear of heights, but we made it up higher than our guide had ever been. The little legs were fair shaking by the time we got back, especially for Case who had to squat over a Chinese toilet (hole in the ground) when we got down!
Drove back with a quick stop off to take a photo of the 'birds nest' (Olympic stadium). We were a bit worried we weren't going to make it at one stage when our trusty driver started to get the head nods! Not what you want when the speed limit is whatever the driver feels like and indicators are only there for decoration!
P.s. We bought a bottle of water at the Forbidden City in the morning and it had ice in it just from sitting outside…and it was still in their when we got back to our room at 5pm! Bloody cold!!
