Today threatened (and delivered) some rain, but that didn't stop us one bit.
We started the day looking to drop off a guest who had been hitchhiking with us for 3000 miles - a Geocaching Travelbug we picked up in Chico before we left. The little guy, Dee Dee le Cafard by his owner (a French geocacher), was found north of town in a cache with other Bugs looking to be carried along on their journeys. Dee Dee's stated goal was to reach Montreal, so we got him as close as we could by placing him in a cache near the Calais Cemetery. Hopefully some helpful Canuck will carry him closer to his goal.
We also spent some time at the oceanside again, at the St. Croiz Island International Historical Site. Located a stone's throw from shore, the island is of historical note to both the Canadians and Americans who share some its historical past. The island at the mouth of the St. Croix River is one of the earliest settlement attempts by Europeans during the Age of Discovery and predates Jamestown VA by three years when close to 80 French explorers were left on the small island for months while their main ship returned for additional supplies. Facing a harsh winter and dangerous ice floes in the river that cut them off from the mainland, half of the men starved until the spring thaws allowed the local Passamaquoddy Indians to reach the island with some aid. Today the isle is unreachable to visitors but the interpretive center and mainland beach is. Again the kids enjoyed splashing in the waves and exploring what the tide had washed up that day to shore, including some decomposing dear parts (yuck!).
