With another day left in Chile before we head to Argentina, we decide to head for Valparaiso, one of the lonely planet's top 6 list for Chile. A quaint beachside resort, population 276,000. On arrival we wonder why we have bothered! Loads of stray dogs and consequently the resulting poo! Grey, very foggy, run down buildings and loads of beggars. We struggle with the thought that it's just the absence of the sun letting this place down.
Finally after a rest bite in the form of lunch we head of with map in hand to find the much talked about funiculars. After much searching and almost giving up we find one, more like a garden shed on pulleys it doesn't look particularly safe, but I figure it can't be worse than bungy jumping or sky diving and for the bargain price of 28p in Jump in! And, at the top we finally get Valparaiso, if we could see through the fog it would be a fantastic view. I would describe it as a pile of random houses, brightly coloured beautiful colonial house nestled amongst ramshackles and grafitti ridden walls, cute little boutique shops and coffee lounges. Very random, but charming!
After walking around taking it all in for hours, we head back on the much talked about tram to catch a bus back to Santiago. That evening the hostel puts on Spag Bol and washed down with a bottle of red wine, it isn't long before bed calls.
