Well there is not too much to say about Nasca only that we were there about two weeks ago so we are a little behind on our updates.
In Nasca we stayed at a little family run hostal in the middle of the very small town. We had a room to our selves (we seem to be quite good at this) and only ended up staying for one night unlike we had planned.
The afternoon that we arrived we booked a flight over the Nasca Lines with a local company and were set to fly the following morning quite early. We followed this by a vist to their local planetaruim which although interesting, we were none the wiser as to why the lines are where they are or why the natives put them there. We did however have a look through an electronic telescope and saw Saturn and the moon in such detail it was incredible.
When morning came around we were picked up by a transfer and taken to a tiny air port full of very small 3 and 5 people planes. Everything was handled really well and we were asked to wait until word came from the control tower that the condtions were good for us to fly. After a good 2hour wait we set off with a South African lady as our third passenger and started our 35minute journey over the lines.
There are not really many words to describe what we saw, the lines are absolutely incredible. Especially when you know how they were constructed. The dark surface stones were all removed to expose the lighter gravel below but they had no arial views or machinery and yet the lines are perfectly straight and carry on for miles at a time. No one knows why they were made although there are many theories but the sheer extent of the lines and the area they cover is astonishing.
Although Laura had been a little apprehensive about the flight, she was completely fine and loved evey minute of it. Carrie on the other hand who was really excited about the flight and hard as nails.....felt a little bit squiffy. This was nothing compared to the lady flying with us who needed to sniff ethanol handed to her by the pilot and have cool air blown in her face. Needless to say, she made it back without too much drama much to our delight!
The afternoon was spent in the middle of nowhere at a cemetery of open graves that were discovered when a group of grave robbers rather unpolitely uncovered and stole many of the hidden treasures years ago. Although interesting, after our earlier flight, not a lot was going to match what we had seen.
