Kiwi Experience Day 11:
Woke up super early this morning. Yay for free brekkie (lied last night and explained it was morally wrong to eat meat (Anna's view) so we could exchange our dinner vouchers for breakfast ones, and then went out and bought a chicken burrito...).
Then onto the Ferry - had a scone with cream and jam and missed England.
We've arrived on the South Island! Drove through Marlborough sounds,so beautiful - it's a good job NZ is so stunning, and different as you drive round -we defs seen most of it.
Got to Kaiteriteri went and sat on the beach and ate budget cookies.
Day 12:
Beach in the morning then drove to Westport. Learnt a fun fact, there are 30,000 people living on the West Coast of NZ - we've googled and there are 150,000 people in Oxford and it's clear we're driving through pretty empty places - Anna and I decided to walk out to get a cup of tea (missing a good cuppa) at 9pm - there was not one shop open, not even the petrol station. Made a poor dinner tonight, can of lentils, can of tomatoes and some rice, cooked.
Day 13:
Left Westport and long drive to lake Manipua hotel, also known as the poo pub (still unclear why) it was a 'P' theme party, I dressed up as a pony with neigh written across me. Anna as a puppy with woof and oliv as a pig with oink... Pretty pathetic when you saw other people, one girl dressed as popcorn - complete with the box - another as a pineapple.. Etc.
Day 14:
Yummy brekkie - pancakes, bacon and maple syrup (in case it's not been clear until now, gap year pretty much revolves around food). Then drove to Franz Josef, short drive today - super sunny so some nice photo stops on the way. Staying in a fun place in Franz - Rainforest Retreat! Went out and bought nice lunch in the sun (see more food...). Chilled afternoon and beans on toast for supper!
Day 15:
Free day in Franz Josef today - got a shuttle ride up to the glacier and did a long walk to it. It's really rapidly melting - our bus driver told us was really important to go see it and we will probably be the last generation too.. I was here with Dad in 2011 and there's a big difference. (Ims in 2009 was able to walk up it - but it's too unsafe to do that now). Tried all day to get into the hot tub at the hostel, it was either too full or too closed. Had another meal of kidney beans and tomatoes so Anna decided it was chips time, probably the best we've ever had. (Food, food, food....)
