Day 19:
Small 'bottom bus' today! Anna called it first class when she first got on - she was so wrong (you'll see why at the end of this post)... Nice drive to Dunedin - stopped off at a cute cafe where two American sisters told me I was tall, as tall as Frankie (it's unclear who Frankie is...). Arrived in Dunedin (NZ answer to Edinburgh) walked past a 'best of' Scottish shop - mannequin in the window had an apron on saying To be Welsh is to be proud...
And walked the steepest street in the World - Bawldin Street (was tough).
Day 20:
When we pictured NZ we expected the South Island to be cold and rainy but having spent a few days in amazing weather (better than the North) we thought we had been completely wrong. Turns out we really weren't.. Left Dunedin and drove a few mins out to walk to a Lighthouse - looked like a lovely 10 minute walk, as we left the bus it started pouring torrential rain - we decided half way that the walk wasn't worth how soaking we were getting so turned around - but realised the bus driver had vacated the bus and locked it - so we were then stood in the pouring cold rain waiting. This was at about 9am, and we were arriving at our next Hostel at 7pm - so a long drive and unfortunately the bus driver had to keep the air conditioning on, otherwise bus steamed up and he couldn't see.. So not only soaking wet but also freezing cold (hence why we hated bus, I mean I know safety should come first - but like come on). Stopped at another walk (last attempt) and saw some sea lions! Then gave up, bus driver said worst trip (because of weather) he'd taken in 4 years.. So arrived in Invercargill - got under the duvet ate a cereal bar and stayed there till it was an acceptable time to go to sleep..
Day 21:
Amazing trip round Milford Sound - bus driver said you only get days like this once every two months (so yey for things being on our side). Long drive back to Queenstown, while on drive we realised we had no accommodation for that night (long story but basic a mess up from Nomads/Kiwi Ex/us..). Called every hostel in existence in Queenstown (literally there are 25) not one bed available... Contemplated buying a tent.. Then contemplated staying in fergburger till 4am and then hitting the streets.. Arrived in Queenstown walked round a few hostels to check they were not lying (they weren't.) and then turned out all motels were either closed or no vacancies.. After 45 minutes of hiding our tears from each other - we faced facts and had to check into to a luxury hotel. Was the cost, each, of 4 nights hostel - so we stayed up till at least 1am to make sure we got our money's worth (also took shower gel, shampoo and emery board..) amazed at the realness of the towels - first time we'd been actually dry after a shower. (Also we got another amazing Ferg burger, cause we always like to take it back to food..)
Day 22:
Quote from Anna's diary: 'we woke up like Kings'.
Checked out of hotel (sad). Then up to Lake Tekapo- I would say I'm the least sun worshipper of the three - but really enjoyed being able to lie by the lake in the sun all afternoon...
Day 23:
Arrived in Christchurch early - walked around the Re:Start shopping mall, all shops made out of shipping containers really cool! Long walk to see all the ruins from the earthquake - we were surprised how many buildings were still devastated and empty from the earthquake 4 years ago. Saw the Cathedral ruins and then walked to the temporary cathedral made entirely of cardboard - really innovative.
After looking at the ruins we were all scared of a potential earthquake (we were told on arrival that they felt tremors here in the last few weeks) - meaning while playing cards Anna spent 15 minutes repeatedly going to the window to 'look for earthquakes'. Anna made us all read the safety precautions in the event of an earthquake. Olivia wanted to move the chair so we had easy access to under the desk (as instructed to do so). This didn't help Anna's anxiety.
