"You see those squiggles...?"
Another bright and sunny day, and we sent off in a taxi by our tour director/random bloke in the hostel who only had half a foot for a bus bound for Nazca. Caroline was feeling pretty rough and suspected food poisoning at the hands of the restuarnt next door to our hostel, so what better way to compound this by sending her up in a four-seater plane!
The Nazca Lines are mysterious ancient 'drawings' in the earth which can only really be viewed from above. No-one knows quite how they were formed but conspiracies abound and our money's on the UFOs! There are about fifteen of the images, including a hummingbird, condor and a rather cool monkey with a very curly tail. After a very nice take off, the pilot flew towards the lines and once we started seeing them (quite difficult at first when you think you're looking at a geometrical design then realise it's the Pan American Highway) he helpfully banked sharply to the right, then to the left so we could get a good look. Caroline decided that to avoid an embarrassing scenario involving the back of the pilot's jacket, she should close her eyes and only open them when we were actually at an image. This worked in so far as she wasn't sick, but some advice to all: do not attempt small plane acrobatics while suffering from extreme nausea.
We had heard mixed reviews of this trip, but even Caroline's glad we saw the lines and it's definitely a great tour to add to the checklist. What better way to finish off the day than with an eight hour coach ride to Arequipa!
