What a beautiful place Double Lagoon was, and our hosts Max & Bill were the just nicest people. We did not see much of them while we were there as they were so busy running the property. The house sits on the banks of a very large lagoon which is an absolute photographer's paradise. It attracts all walks of wild life and I was fortunate to capture Sirus Cranes, Brolgas, Herons & Cormorants as well as a few Kangaroos. It was just so picturesque especially in the morning when the animals and birds came into drink. The first day we were there we decided to run into Karumba (70ks north) to see the sights and to have lunch at the best fish & chip shop in the Gulf which is just opposite the Sunset Tavern. We also needed to top up with fuel & water; everyone had a few important errands to attend to before we all met for lunch and then afterwards visited the Sunset Tavern. After a quick zip around the town and down to the boat ramp and the local wharf where Raptis fishing fleet moor their trawlers we bought fresh prawns and barra (nothing but the best) before heading back to Double Lagoon.
The following day was a nothing day, so the girls did a bit of cleaning and washing while the boys spent most of their time trying to get the satellite communications network up & running for Bill, they spent nearly all day fiddling with it and in the long run by the end of our stay they had it working.I was able to get a few good photographs on the lagoon that day so I was more than happy. It had been arranged that the boys go fishingfor barra while we were at the property but apparently the fishing spot was on another property and the owner had fenced off the area to stop illegal fishermen from getting in.It was a bit disappointing but never mind there will be another time & place. That afternoon both Bill & Maxine joined us for happy hour.
Wednesday morning we were invited to have morning tea with Max & Bill and their farmhands. They eat very well at the property; we raved over the freshly made scones with jam & cream and brownies too.Max is a great cook and she has a pretty good offsider as well, as a jillaroo she is very handy in the kitchen. That afternoon we all headed into Karumba again, we had invited Bill & Max out for dinner at the Sunset Tavern. We went in a little earlier just so that we could watch the sun go down over the horizon. It was a beautiful sight and most people who have visited Karumba would have done the same thing, it is one of the must do's. The following morning we will be moving on again, our next stop will be Burke & Wills roadhouse on the way to Lawn Hill, so keep on watching this sight.I am finally catching up with the blog entries now that we have a signal and of course being able to plug into power also helps
