Sun 4 to Wed 7 July 2010
Sunday. Raining again for the 3rd day in a row but it was moving day so we just had to grin and bear it. We had intentions of staying at Yunguburra near Lake Tinaroo but could not get a decent site so moved on to Lake Etcham where we had the same trouble (school hols). We finally ended up going out to Herberton approx 40k from Mareeba. What a beautiful area it was, and the van park was one of the nicest we had been in so far (8 out of 10). It turned out to be a good choice as it was very central to nearly everything we wanted to see. The first afternoon we were there we all decided to walk into town (except for Warren, he was cooking a roast for dinner) well we must have walked around 4ks, up hill and down dale, we never did make it into town, it was a lot further than we thought. We all dined together that night a lovely roast dinner thank you Warren.
Monday. Jenny Paul & H went into Atherton to meet friends for morning tea, so Sue, Bob Warren & I all bundled into one car and went into Atherton as well, We had a good day, had a good look around, lunched, replenished our supplies of food and grog, the weather was a little better than on the coast, it got rather warm in the arvo.
Tuesday. We all want our own seperate way again as Jenny & Paul wanted to show H the big city of Cairns (H is from Perth & Never been this far north). They had a great day doing the full circuit from Herberton to Atherton, Mareeba, Cairns, Kurunda, Gordenvale, Yungaburra, Malanda and back to Herberton. Bob Sue Warren & I drove to Atherton (we had to pick up Bob's camera that he left in the caffee the day before), up to the lookout at Atherton then on to Skybury Coffee plantation 10s out of Mareeba where we had morning tea, the restaurant was built on the side of a steep hill overlooking a small lake amongst a beautiful bushland setting, the butcher birds were very friendly, it was a very pleasant morning but expensive. After Mareeba we had lunch then came back to Tolga where we went to a wood carving cottage, quite exquisite. Just outside of Tolga is the service memorials at Rocky creek. The monuments are dedicated to thousands of people that were stationed in the area during WW2. From there we went on to Yunguburra to look at the Curtain Fig tree, an accident of nature, created a vast curtain of roots which drop 15 metres to the ground, it was amazing, it's worth the look. Our last stop for the day was a cheese and chocolate factory at Malanda, we bought some very expensive chocolates I am sure they are made of gold dust, they certainly know how to milk the tourist dollar up here. The only thing lacking on the tablelands would be a caravan accessories outlet because we tried everywhere to find a step for the van (same as the one we left behind) but no where could we fine one. Oher than that they have it all.
Wednesday. A beautiful day so everyone did some washing and then packed a light lunch and all went to the Crater and Dinner Falls in Mt Hypipamee National Park which was absolutely spectacular. It was a good 2k walk around the falls and to see the crater, a good day was had by all. On the way home we called in to see the Tin Mining Museum in Herberton, a pretty good display of rocks and gemstones very interesting and was only $3 for pensioners, good value. This is our last night here and we all more than impressed at the lovely van park and especially Herberton. There is so much to see and do around this area that one really needed a week to fit it all in.
On the road again tomorrow, we are headed for Undara and the Lava Tubes, we ar all looking forward to that , see you all there. LOL C&W
