Week two of my amazing trip. Must have been on drugs or drink when I packed or reading a kit list for some other place I thought it was going to be 40 degrees but it is very changeable. Some days are really warm but when it rains which has been quite often it is really cold, so one swearshirt and four pairs of flipflops don't really cut it. Hence my feet are completely wrecked with blisters. It was decided that it would be best if I got time off duties to go into town and get some sensible shoes. Sunday - half day off, went to waterfall. It was amazing (sorry keep saying amazing but borrowing a note book and hav'nt got time to make up other adjectives) very beautiful. We all went swimming and had a picnic. It is quite a dangerous place- Carita slipped on rock and craked her head and I slipped into water which had a really strong current and I thought I was going to die!!!!! (auntie Kim). Another volunteer last year fell and broke her foot - she had to wait for air rescue. It took so long it got cold and dark and they had to make a fire by burning Rand notes! Got to spend time in the nursery with babies, we have two, Whisper and Pickle. Pickle's mother was killed by a couple who wanted a baby Vervet then decided they could'nt cope - unbelievable. They are being introduced to each other this afternoon.Went in to Tzaneen this afternoon to buy trainers and pick up volunteers. Got bright pink trainers for 110 sar (8 pounds) and loads of socks so feet should be ok. Picked up new volunteers. 2 German girls and 1 Dutch, 1 New Zealand man and a couple from Peterborough. Dave the founder of the sanctuary got a call to say there was a baby 1 1/2 hours away. Josie, his wife, was busy so he asked if I would like to go with him to collect her. A shooting party had killed loads of monkeys one of them being her mother. She is tiny and I have adopted her and called her Daisy. One of the long term volunteers is leaving tomorrow so about half the people have gone out for a meal. I am babysitting Daisy in my cabin ((garden shed). She won't drink her milk and spits it out. She ends up covered in it , all sticky and looks very scruffy, nothing like her namesake. Wednesday, early start for Kruger. Ten of us went with our own guide in a mini bus, his name is Matthew. We drove to the park about two hours from here. We had our own tents which we had to put up. Once camp was set up we went on a sunset drive with one of the Kruger guides in an open jeep while Matthew cooked our dinner on a brazier. We saw a leopard in a tree right next tot the road with it's kill, a baby zebra, The next two days we were on the road by 4.30 am, early starts but well worth it as you saw many more animals. Over the three days we saw the big five twice (elephants, rhino, lion, leopard, buffalo) 46 different rare and beautiful birds including a Southern Ground Hornbill, Secretary Bird, 4 Cap Vultures and a Martial Eagle , Hyena, Jackel, Waterbuffalo, Wilderbeast, Giraffe, Zebra ,Wildcats and a Honeybadger. Back to VMF Friday evening, another baby boy called Gregory. Loves daisy and they sleep cuddled up together.Sad because my room mate Carita is leaving to go to Capetown in the morning. Sat - Careta left me her pink umbrella as a going away present to match my trainers. Now I have my garden shed all to myself. I don't want a new room mate because nobody could match up to her. Had a bit of a meltdown today. Phone died so had'nt contacted anyone since Tuesday.Cried a lot. Tried everthing and finally took out battery put it back and voila! working. Had nice chat with Phil about washing and ironing! So end of another fantastic week .See photos, most of my Kruger are brown blobs in distance so have copied Jenny's. Enjoy xxxxx
