Since it has been over 3 months now since my last update, and over 2 months since I moved to Spain, I thought it was about time to write something. I wish I could say that I have just been so busy studying Spanish verb tables and working on my year abroad projects in between working, but the truth is, life in Madrid is a bit of a permanent Fresher's week, and I have mainly been going out and recovering from going out in between working! Even my Spanish housemate has commented that I go out a lot, and when a Spanish person tells you you go out a lot, you're probably going out too much. I now apologise for getting defensive to people back home who joked about me having a year-long holiday in the middle of my degree...you're not wrong!
To be fair, I'm making the most of it before my life becomes more metro, boulot, dodo in Paris, and in a city like Madrid, it would be rude not to. Madrid is an absolutely amazing city. It's not too big, quite pretty, and it never sleeps. I love my job, I am paid to chat to people all day long, mostly interesting people, which is great apart from the fact I probably only speak Spanish about 5% of the day. Luckily I live in a Spanish speaking house in an area called Chueca, which is my favourite area of the city, and I'm not being biased because I live there. Not only do I live a minutes walk from the best ice-cream shop in the city (yes, even better than Italy), it is the gay district (no creepy men, bonus!), and it is beautiful. I live ten minutes from the Retiro park, Madrid's answer to central park, and 5 minutes from the Gran Via, Madrid's answer to Oxford street. For the icing on the cake, I've got a great group of friends to share it all with.
One of the only bad points about year abroads, is having to leave. Especially when you study 3 languages, and have to leave at least 3 times. I hated leaving Italy, and il bel paese mi manca sempre, and did the whole 'in denial about leaving' thing again so that when I arrived here in Madrid I had nowhere to live. You would think that after having arrived in both Italy and Spain with nowhere to live I would be extremely motivated to not be in this situation again when moving to Paris. Of course I'm not, I'm in denial again. Luckily I still have until 29th December to get my vie parisienne sorted.
Until then I am going to carry on enjoying Madrid, as I know that when I am sitting in Durham a year from now writing an essay, I will have wished I had said yes to that drink after work. Hopefully I will have some interesting and witty story to tell for my next blog entry, but for now that is my update.
Hasta la proxima
