Hi all, hope you are well.....firstly, sorry for the delay, we have got camera problems again so photos to follow soon but hope you'll enjoy my blog......
Wiping away the tears, we reluctantly boarded the dreaded boat, waving goodbye to the paradise island and life on Phi Phi (sniff, sniff). We were heading to our second to last destination in Asia, Malaysia's capital city of Kuala Lumpur.
After a short flight from Phuket, we arrived in Kuala Lumpur and headed into the city to find a place to stay. I had been there before (last October when I went to meet Linz and Grant) and remembered it quite well. We ended up staying at the same place I'd stayed before as it was in a good location, clean and the people were lovely. I did ask if the recognised me but funnily enough they didn't!!
That first evening we were pretty tired so just went for a wander around, had some dinner and then went back and watched a dvd in the living room area. It was bliss to curl up on a sofa and watch a film.....
The next morning, we started our sightseeing, first visiting the KL tower. This is the world's 4th largest telecommunications tower (the 3rd largest being the Oriental Pearl tower in Shanghai which we also visited when we were there), so we're now quite the experts in telecommmunication towers!!!! From the skydeck at the top of the tower, you can see the views of the whole city. We wandered around and followed the audio guided tour and of course took a snap or two....
After this we "flew the fox", which is basically a zip line that runs about 70 metres long from the side of the KL tower to a platform at the bottom. You get strapped into a safety harness and then launch yourself off the platform and fly along the zip line. It was great fun and after I mentioned I had done it before when I was last there, we got a couple of free goes thrown in!!
Next we visited Merdeka Square, which was renamed to signify independence when Malaysia broke away from the British Coloney on 31st August 1957. There is a huge flag pole in the middle of the square which flies the Malay flag and it was on this date that it was first flown.
Next we walked along to another part of the city called "Little India". Kuala Lumpur is broken up into many different areas signifying all the different cultures and religions that exist in the city. Little India is where many of the muslims live and all around are lots of stalls, shops and restaurants selling indian cuisine, tasty little treats and handicrafts. Obviously we couldn't resist sampling a little of the authentic grub and tucked into some samosas and bhaji's from a little street stall. We then decided to "brave it" and went into one of the "restaurants" or sorry I should say more of a "street cafe"....we could see the food on a hotplate so after pointing at various dishes, asking what they were (didn't want to end up with dog or something!) we ended up with a huge plateful of chicken curry, rice, a popadom and some random cucumber spicy thing.....it was really tasty (yes Grant, i am talking about food again!)
Later that afternoon, we headed over to Chinatown to meet one of Carly's friends, Franko, that she met when she was travelling before. We wandered around the many market stalls selling everything from fake handbags, watches, dvds and other chinese tat (sorry handicrafts!). At one point they all started to quickly pack up their stalls and were rushing to hide...we found out that the police were coming...hence them making a swift exit, v amusing!!!
The next day, accompanied by Franko, we headed to KL's tallest building, The Petronas twin towers situated in the heart of the business district. For those of you film geeks out there, these are the twin towers featured in the film "Entrapment" starring Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta Jones. Each tower is 88 stories high and stretches 452 metres. Here we visited the skybridge on the 41st floor which joins the two towers. The good thing was, it was free to visit, the bad thing was, we couldn't get up there until 4.30pm (we arrived at 10.30am). So what were two girls and a guy to do???? That's right folks, we went shopping!!! Underneath the towers is a huge shopping mall with all the designers from Gucci to Tiffany as well as Marks And Spencers and even Topshop. Carly found this extremely exciting especially as they had English prices on the labels!! Unfortunately us travellers couldn't afford to actually buy anything, we just gazed longily at how the "rich people" live (one day Carly, one day)!!!!!
That evening we enjoyed a few drinks and some dinner with Franko at one of the local malay restaurants before bidding him farewell.....
The next morning, we caught a coach to our final destination in Asia, Singapore.....
Take care until we meet again......
Love
