Today was another amazing, adventerous day! We woke up early to take a bus to Hadrian's Villa. We explored the entire area. Fun fact: while today's property is huge, they have only excavated 1/3 of it so far! I can't even imagine how much there would be to see if the whole thing was uncovered! There was so much history and beauty in everything there - it was wonderful!
We then went to the nearby city of Tivoli. There we enjoyed an absolutely AMAZING lunch prepared by a local family-owned restaraunt with its own history as well. The restaraunt is undergroud, dug out of the mountain. As each new room was dug, more and more artifacts were uncovered, because they are below an ancient church! The church made them stop progress in the direction headed further under the church, btu they are excavating one more in a different direction. She approximated 8 years until it would be a usable room in the restaurant. The owner works there along with her husband and in-laws. The mother-in-law taught us how to make home-made pasta: 15 TBS self-rising flour, and 2 eggs - that's it! The presentation was great and I hope to discover more family-owned traditional restaurants like this one!
After lunch we explored a local property and garden - you could almost call it an Italian Builtmore property. All the fountains and landscaping were exquisite as was the artwork in the rooms we were allowed to enter. Again today I took wayyyy too many pictures, but better to have too many than not enough!
Tomorrow we begin this weekend's big adventure, so I should be off to bed soon. Check out all the pictures today posted in the Hadrian's Villa and Tivoli album!
Arrivederci,
Carla
