Saint Kateri Tekakwitha
This statue stands outside the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis in Santa Fe. Known informally as Lily of the Mohawks (1656-1680), she was the first Indian of North America to be promoted a saint. A smallpox epidemic among her people when she was 4 years old led to the death of her immediate family and left her with facial scars and impaired vision. She converted to Roman Catholicism when she was 19 and spent the last 5 years of her life in a Jesuit mission village in Canada. It is said that minutes after her death at age 24, her scars vanished and her face appeared radiant and beautiful. Various miracles and supernatural events are attributed to her intercession.
