Hola amigos,
After a long flight which was made much more bearable by my wonderful work colleagues getting us an upgrade to Business class we finally arrived into Quito....if only all our flights were like that!!!
We have spent the last couple of days exploring the city and stupidly did not put any sun cream on so we both look like lobsters. Yesterday we visited the new town which we didn't think much of but today we visited the old town which was lovely and more what we expected and not so westernised. We visited the Monastry of Santa Catalina which cost us $1.50 and we had a private one hour tour of the museum and parts of the monastry which was really interesting especially hearing how the nuns live. Definately wouldn't fancy that lifestyle getting up at 4am and working until 9pm when they went to bed and only being allowed to talk to each other for one hour a day. We then visited he Basilica and decided to head for the tower which was exhausting and i wouldn't recommend for anyone with a fear of heights but we got some amazing pics of the whole city and surrounding mountains. We then headed off to a hostel that a couple we got talking to in the Basillica recommended to us, we decided the hostel we are staying in is a bit too far out so we booked into here for after our cruise.
We are struggling with the language barrier as surprisingly everyone we seem to talk to doesn't understand a word of English, we now regret not learning some Spanish before we left but hopefully we'll pick it up soon enough and are planning on taking some lessons.
Off to the Galapagos Islands in the morning and we can't wait!!!
Adios for now!
