Well, these past three nights and four days have been so interesting, that it is hard to be able to write about it in the time I have. When I first landed in Managua I thought I was going to die from the landing, but what the heck, I did not!!! The city of Managua lives up to its reputation of being very crowded and poor. Everyone here says it is extremely dangerous and I am super glad I was only there for about an hour. It is crowded with trash, people, chickens, horses etc. and there are many fincas. I was very glad to leave and the road to Granada was not as bad as I was expecting. The people in Granada speak Spanish faster than in Mexico, but I am learning more and more everyday. Even as I write now, I sometimes am thinking of the Spanish words. HAHA!!! However my favorite word in Spanish as of yet is jerga.....it means slang.....we have many laughs over the different types of slang words used everywhere.
So after the plane ride and getting through customs, which was very interesting....I made it to the familys house I am currently staying with. They made me feel so welcome and on the first day I watched La Cupa del Mundo with mi familia. Afterwards when they found out I smoked, we all bonding sharing stories and smoking cigarettes. Here in Granada it is the custom to sit outside and talk to whoever wanders on up. For some reason despite me butchering the language, all my brothers told me that I was very intelligent and that I pick up quickly...I hope for my sake that this continues. It is so weird writing in English!!!
I thought the heat was going to kill me, but I took my first Nica shower yesterday-------by shower I mean a hose above my head. It felt great until I got out and the heat swallowed me up again.....God I miss showers....but im getting use to it everyday.
Where I stay, there are up to seven people in two rooms (I have one to myself), but the houses here are open in the center, meaning there are no doors or windows...this is to make sure there is a breeze (I have yet to feel such a thing) but it does make you realize how spoiled we all are. I think there was a bird in my room the other night, but I have managed to suffer varely few bug bites. I have learned to love this fan i have gotten and let me tell you....you spoiled brats in the US......BITE ME!!!! What we pay for AC could feed all of Central America.
In addition to the house, there are several differences in the culture that I am coming aware of each day through trial and error. It is not safe to travel by yourself if you are a mujer at night....but mi hermano comes with me most of the time to the store...he is helping me learn Nica customs and the language. I would love to stay here but when my money runs out I must go. The very first thing I will do when I return is collect as much money as possible to send back. Today there were several kids (under the age of 5) sifting through the trash for food. I cannot tell you the heartache seeing all this causes me, especially knowing how i have squandered away tons of money on useless s***.
I am obviously an extranjera here and the men give kisses when I walk by----one super long kiss, but I am told it is a way of flirting....I never respond instead I put my head down and go on my way. The culture is very different and I cannot tell you enough of the stories...however I have little time to speak. I am getting more and more comfortable everyday and tomorrow after school I will go to Masaya with a friend I met. It is suppossed to be beautiful...I can{t wait!!!
