Our trip to Queenstown was epic. It was definitely the highlight of my gap year so far! We had two brilliant nights out, spending most of our time in The Buffalo Club, but also taking part in a pub crawl. After a couple night we became recognised at The Buffalo Club, by the bar maids that we had befriended, we were given free gear including T-shirts, headphones, sunglasses and more, as well as wristbands which gave us 2-4-1 drinks/single drinks at half the price which needless to say we took advantage of. On the Tuesday the three of us enjoyed, but didn't take part, in 'Topless Tuesday', while on Wednesday it was 'Kiss A Ginger Evening'. Both nights included a great deal of drinking, dancing and meeting new people - brilliant fun.
Of course the main focus of our trip other than partying, was to ski!!! We managed to hire some skis, boots and jackets as none of us had any with us at the time, and then hit the slopes for 2 whole days. Having heard locals say that the two days we were planning to go were going to be the best of the season as Queenstown had just had 4 days constant snow, Jenny and I were very excited to get on the snow, while Chris was slightly less excited and a little more nervous.
One the first day we skied the Coronet Peak which was brilliant, the fresh powder was awesome. Ski coaches, Jenny and I, helped Chris (with only one days skiing experience) get on his feet and before long he had moved from the nursery slope and was confidently completing blue level runs. Meanwhile I snuck off and completed a couple challenging blacks, which was great fun. After a hard days ski we persisted with our routine that we had carried out for the past two days and jumped in the hot tub with a few beers, reenergised via Fergburger and hitting the town as mentioned before.
Our second days ski took us to a resort called the Remarkables. The snow here was just as good, and the slopes were just as fun to ski. There was a nice long green/blue run that Chris soon made his own, while a snow park adjoined, which included various jumps and grinds that I greatly enjoyed. The whole day was brilliant, it felt awesome to be back on the snow and skiing black runs, including the distinguished Shadow Basin, 3 black slopes that finish across a frozen lake. After taking some serious footage and humorous photographs, we began to get a little bit cold as the winds were 35-40km/h, with gusts peaking over 50km/h, therefore we retreated by down the mountain. The 40 minute bus trip down the mountain gave me a chance to look down over Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu and see some brilliant views of the other scenery.
Other than partying and skiing, we ate a lot of food, from what has to be the best burger takeaway place that I have ever been customer too.. Fergburger. What A Place! Outrageous size burgers, with unbelievable combos, including, pork, streak, burgers, bacon, cheese and any filling you can imagine - all for a very reasonable price. Likewise, we took advantage of this too, and ended up indulging in 4 Fergburger's in 3 days. Also we took the gondolier up the mountain were we saw more views of the area and enjoyed three rides on the luge. The luge is a downhill track that you race one another on, while in carts that allow you to control the steering and brakes/acceleration. It was great fun and we each one a race - Chris is a dirty racer and was involved in a great deal of foul play, including pushing me off the track on to the grass verge.
We finally made tracks and headed home. The trip back seemed to take an age, but we made it eventually and went straight to bed.
