Brussels 20th- 22nd of march
Written: on the train to Barcelona at 6am!
Brussels was a last minuet decision for us. Originally was wanted to go up to Denmark and spend some time in Copenhagen but after looking on the internet for some time we realised that it was way to expensive and if there were cheap places to stay then they were already booked. So after much umming and arrring at the hostel in berlin (and over 6 hours on the internet for me) we came to the decision of brussels (actually I finally had enough of sitting on the computer researching different cities so I just got onto google maps, closed my eyes and the closest city to where my finger landed was were we where going)!
The night train was an experience and a half! Because we booked at the last minuet we got stuck with the s***ty seats so the both of us were stuck in-between two complete strangers and we couldn't go to another cabin because the train was packed. I don't know about anyone else but trying to sleep sitting up and making sure that you don't fall onto the person next to you is harder than it sounds and its safe to say that I got very little sleep that night. So by the time we got to brussels me and courtney were exhausted! It was this fact that saved the concierge at our hotel from one big temper tantrum because when we got there I was told that I had been charged for the night we missed because we had to get the overnight train. This would have been fine, but I had rung them in berlin and told them that we weren't going to be able to make the first night! I was very pissed off and that place wasn't a cheap either. I was too tired by this point too put up a fight so instead I made sure that I got the most out of the hotel especially the free internet!
We didn't get up to much that first day, because it was mid morning by the time we got to our room so it was a good time to ring home, unfortunately it wasn't a good time back home because mum and dad were in the middle of a big storm so we got disconnected once due to the power. Western power how ever pull through this one time and the power managed to stay on for the whole storm! What are the chances! so I spent an hour and a half on the phone to the parents while Courtney was Skypeing her parents. After this Courtney crashed and fell asleep while I did a little blog writing. I managed to stay awake till 6 when I finally got tired and hungry so i when out and saw a little of Brussels and the food they have to offer. I had read somewhere that brussels was famous for really good fries so decided to give them a go. I have to say they weren't life changing but still good (more like chips that fries though). When i got back to the hotel Courtney was still asleep and she even managed to sleep through me opening and eating my fries.
The next day I was up at 10:00 but Courtney slept in till 11:30 so she had managed to get over 20 hours sleep!! By the time we showered and got ready our immediate though was food! And whats better to eat for launch in Belgium than a waffle, so off we when in search of some waffles. Well you would expect that is a county is famous for something it would be easy to find yeah? We honestly searched for 2 hours for a cafe/restaurant/bar/anything that would sell us some waffles. We managed to find the main square (by accident), heaps of chocolate places, an ally full of sea food restaurants and just about every other type of food except waffles! We did in the end find a ice cream parlour that sold waffles and I have to say they were very very yummy, well worth the walk and the plus side is that we walked them off trying to find them!!
We spent the rest of the day walking around checking out the sights and sounds of Brussels. It was a older city like Prague with heaps of cobble stones and was very beautiful especially the main square, with all the buildings elaborately decorated with hundreds of statues. One in particular was very different with heaps of columns and spires, it gave off a very gothic vibe but was quite beautiful. For dinner we had to go back to the seafood ally, where there were meals for 12 €! I had the Paella which was fantastic, it was great to taste some seafood! After dinner we decide to go and find the statue Manneken Pis because it was close to where we where. This is the most over rated attraction in Europe! I have to say that after reading about it in all these guide books I though that at least it would be bigger, and if not you could at lease get close to it! After this we went back to our room for a good nights sleep before we headed off to Amsterdam tomorrow, because chances are that we wont be getting any for a while!! :)
