I had already spent one night in Athens the night before leaving for Mykonos, and although the city didn't impress me much, (smelly, dirty and dodgy) the view from the top of my hostel was breathtaking. The acropolyis and the pantheon lit up at night in this incredible slice of history really made you appreciate this city for what it was. I didn't really venture far from my hostel the first night (30 hours of transit may have had something to do with it) so I was happy to meet my roommate joshwa who was about to experience the Greek islands, not recovering from them like everyone else. We walked around the dingy streets, but eventually stumbled upon a street lined with cafes and restaurants, and was very lively. The world cup final was on, and every restaurant had a tv with it on, so Josh and I found an italian place and sat down for a beer or two to watch the end. As you could imagine the Italians got particularly upset when Italy lost.
The next day a big group of us decided to do the walking tour of Athens that we had been told really changes your perspective on the place. Unfortunately the walking tour changed meeting places without telling anyone, so we attempted to do it ourselves. We walked up to the acropolyis with hundreds of other tourists battling the insane winds. Although the ruins were breathtaking, the heat, wind and Americans made it a pretty difficult task. We wandered around the city for some time before heading to h&m for my first h&m experience. It was quite successful to say the least.
That night I had amazing gyros for dinner (2nd of the day) and went out with josh and two other pre-islands travelers (one who lives a block from me in kensington, and is the son of the advertising genius who came up with the 'want longer sex' billboards) for beers, more beers and more gyros. Man I miss gyros.
