Our last two days in Hawaii both involved big hikes! On Wednesday we caught a bus, which took us out along the very scenic south-eastern coastline, to Makapu'u Point Lighthouse. Unfortunately there were no bus stops near the lighthouse so we had to walk about 2kms uphill just to get to the start of the lighthouse walk - not the best start! The walk to the lighthouse point saw us clambering up the side of a mountain, thankfully along paved paths. Though we have loved the perfect weather in Hawaii, the direct sunlight throughout our walk left us both very hot and sweaty, and just a little sunburnt. The views from the top however were spectacular and well worth the 6km round trip. The picture above is of Tim standing at the edge of a cliff on top of the point with the gorgeous coastline behind him. On the way down we were lucky enough to spot a humpback whale a little way off the shoreline that jumped out of the water a few times but we weren't quite quick enough to get a photo. The only downside of the hike was that it took a lot longer than expected (the unexpected 1 hour bus strike didnt help) and we didn't get to make it back out to Lanikai Beach as we had hoped. We did however make it back for an early dinner at Ono Hawaiian Foods (Ono is Hawaiian for delicious), touted as one of the best restaurants for authentic Hawaiian food on the island, and we were definitely glad we did. Caitlin was boring and only ordered chicken long rice soup (which was delicious) but I ordered a hawaiian feast of kalua pig, lomi lomi, haupia
This morning, with heavy legs, we managed to find the time for a hike up to the top of Diamond Head Crater before our flight up to Vancouver. Again we set off up the side of a mountain, this time over rocky paths, through some dark tunnels and up a few flights of steep stairs. The views from the top were just as good if not better than the day before. We could look out over Waikiki and all its highrise hotels, over the coastline in a couple of directions, and out to the mountain ridge that seperates Waikiki from the northern shores. We took our time at the top appreciating the amazing views and taking a few snaps, and had to speed on the way down to make it back to the hostel for checkout. We had one more hour to kill before our shuttle to the airport, so we had a last walk down to Waikiki beach and along the main streets that we've become familiar with. It was a nice way to end our time in Hawaii, we're a little sad to leave the gorgeous weather and the beautiful beaches and scenery in this little patch of paradise, but very excited to get going on the next leg of our trip and on to Vacouver and Whistler - the freezing temperatures not so much!
Talk to you soon from Canada ay, Caitlin and Tim xo
