Travel Trivia: What do locals call Machu Picchu? Mucha Pictures.
What do you say about Machu Picchu? It is soooo hard to capture the significance and beauty of this site in words or in pictures. So I'll be brief. First, the site is huge. Second, the architecture is mindboggling and fascinating. Third, you keep taking the same picture over and over again, because your mind simply can't grasp the beauty, so you think it's more beautiful when you move 6ft.
We started with an hour or so guided tour before lunch, then had lunch and checked into the hotel. Our first tour was incredibly busy. After lunch, there was a long line waiting for buses to take people back to the town below (otherwise a 90min hike), and the site itself was much less crowded. We spent another 2.5hrs there with our guide, walking all the way up to the guard house where you can take your Christmas card picture (the famous one you see in all the books, see "money shot" under photos). It was a great tour, dispite the fact that my battery died 10ft below the guard house... And would you believe that this is the one time I didn't bring a spare?
Machu Picchu is a spiritual place to many. You'll see people meditate, alone or in groups, and you'd almost join them. It's that kind of place. Much of the techniques we discovered yesterday are repeated here, there's just much more of an abundance of it.
We all enthusiastically gathered in the bar for drinks afterwards, and were briefed on the options for tomorrow morning. We picked the challenging hike up to the sun gate. It starts as the park opens at 6, and views are spectacular about 5 times a year. The rest of the time the views are covered with clouds.
