This is the windiest place in the Universe
Given the air conditioner cut out the noise of the howling wind last night, I'd forgotten how strong it was. I was reminded very quickly once I stepped outside!
We were on the road by 10.00am and our next stop was Carnarvon for fresh produce. I am surprised by the lack of road kill on the road. Reading back through my previous diary entries for this trip there was a constant theme of the enormous amount of road kill. Kimbo thought maybe it’s because there has been no rain and therefore no animals coming to the road to drink. They’ve had to stay close to other sources of water……..made sense to me. Apart from some feral goats and one emu no further wildlife to be seen.
The country is desolate, harsh and unforgiving, low salt bush and nothing that you could call trees and so flat.
I was surprised when we purchased Carnarvon bananas in Carnarvon that they were $4.29/kg!!!! I baulked when we paid $3.99 in Perth! Naturally as we move northwards prices do increase but hard to justify those bananas, hopefully they’ll be delicious. Diesel $1.779/litre.
Destination was Point Quobba and we arrived early afternoon some 70km NW of Carnarvon. Much has changed since we were here last in 2002, apart from the wind. To call it relentless and incessant doesn’t describe it well enough. This is indeed the windiest place we’ve ever visited. This is our 4th visit and I guess the question could be asked……why keep coming back? It’s a fisherman’s paradise and my fisherman has had much success here over the years. Together with that the coast is wildly beautiful and the isolation and desolation has to be witnessed. The big attraction is the amazing blowholes, which were working a treat.
After finding a suitable spot we were surprised how many international travellers were here, given it was very hot and windy and certainly not a day for the beach – they were on the beach!!! We went for a walk to the blowholes and were distressed to see a recently deceased goat at the water’s edge and one atop the cliff. There appears to be a lot of feral goats here or some sort of cross species of goat/sheep/cattle. They are weird and nothing like the goats that roam the highway and on Quobba Station.
Very intermittent phone and internet.
We went for a drive around the southern most point, and I won’t say we got bogged, but in order to get out of the sand the tyres had to be deflated – as was I for short time! It was hot and we were many kilometres from our home and I didn’t feel like a long trudge back for assistance. Drama averted!
The lighthouse flashed all night and the moon was just past full but the sound of the wind was all I needed to lull me to sleep.
Friday morning brought no better news in regard to the wind but instead of coming from the NW it was now SW so if we keep everything crossed maybe it will be gone tomorrow.
Kimbo was hanging out for a fish so we went for a drive looking for a suitable spot. Spot found and we re-visited the HMAS Sydney II cairn. There was a wreath that had been laid to commemorate the 72nd anniversary on 19th November 2013.
Home we came where Kimbo packed up his fishing gear and off he went to bring home our dinner.
While he was gone I evicted the ants that had taken residence in our rubbish bin cupboard…..grrrr!!! Dragged out some meat for a BBQ just in case……….then sat back and read.....mmmmm the perfect way to while away the afternoon.
Hours later he was back empty handed. However the good news was there were no fish to fillet!!!
The rangers had come around to collect the fees and advised that the wind wouldn’t be abating until Monday and then it would be really hot. So the decision was made, we would leave tomorrow and with one more stop would make it to Onslow (our destination) before Christmas.
