Worship today was good ol' Army style & while we didn't understand a lot of what was spoken or sung, we did recognize the tunes to army songs and choruses and were able to sing along and enter the spirit of the meeting together of the saints. Peter was able to share his testimony with the Chief Secretary translating. It was a God honoring time.
In the afternoon we set out for the city on the bus, now that was an experience! It was jam packed and not one single ticket validating machine worked, the poor old bus rattled away , sounding like it would fall to bits at any moment.
We caught our first glimpse of the Colosseum and many ancient buildings as well. Many if the roads are cobblestone and very hard on vehicles and backs.
The following day we headed off for a trip around the city on the Red hop-on, hop-off bus. And it was a good trip and an eye opener for us. We have discovered that jumping on this bus is one of the best ways to get a feel for a place as it takes you to all the highlights.
We jumped off the bus at the Vatican and hooked up with a tour group for a three hour tour of this amazing place; the only trouble was that half of Rome decided to do the same thing!
The total tour was like being in a sardine can, so many visitors were at the vatican! There were many highlights but two stand out. The first being a beautiful courtyard in the Vatican adjacent to the Sistine Chapel which had the most gorgeous lawn, green and lush! It was pleasing to the eye after the dryness of most of Rome.
The second highlight was the tour through the Sistine Chapel, and being able to view the great art work on the ceiling by Michael Angelo. A beautiful place, and fabulous craftsmanship.
After this we headed to the Colosseum to get a firsthand picture of life in The glory days of Rome. I must admit that it was not as impressive as I had thought it would be, but then we had had a big day already and were very tired.
By the time we got home late that evening we were totally exhausted.
