Craig & Jills Round the World Trip
We arrived in Cusco on Sunday and headed straight to our hotel. We rested for 5 hours, and luckily it paid off as we havent suffered from altitude sickness. I guess the cocoa tea helped as well. Cusco is 11,500ft above sea level, and surrounded by even higher mountains. We are still having a great time, and getting on, no arguments yet, however we are a little concerned we are morphing into each other as someone asked if we were brother and sister!
Sunday evening we went for a walk into the main square and met some of the lovely friendly children, all who want to sell you a postcard, but are very funny and cute. They even wound up Craig calling him Zinadine Zidane! They all speak really good english and put us to shame, plus tell us lots of facts about our country like whjo the queen is. We can def say the people here have to be one of the highlights. Its also funny seeing the women in the typical inca style outfits, they really wear these clothes, I thought it was just for tourists!
Monday we spent the morning wandering round cusco, and went in some old churches and past some inca ruins. In the afternoon we went on a tour to the main cathedral, an monestry, an inca temple and other inca ruins on the outskirts of town. Here we learned how clever the incas had been to build the temples with huge stones, perfectly joined with no cement. We also got to take numerous photos with more friendly locals, and of course got to see lots of lamas and alpacas. Craig even got swamped by local school girls wanting his photo, so you can imagine that was his highlight! We also got to see lots of religious paintings and statues, which were bizarre as they show Jesus wearing an inca skirt and one had him wearing a typical inca hat. We got took to the typical tourist shop at the end, however we made an untypical purchase our own personalised postcards, with our photos on. We had wondered why the locals were taking our photo!
Cusco is a lovely place, lots of tiny narrow cobbled streets with old barroque style buildings. The people obviously are quite poor, however they seem really happy. There are also lots of dogs everywhere, but im pleased to say these also seem happy and well fed.
Despite saying we wouldnt we have both been kitted out with inca hats, jill been greedy and getting 2, well at 2 pound cant complain!
Tomorrow up early to machu pichu
