Craig & Jills Round the World Trip
Well as you can see from the picture jill is not happy at having to stay in a hostel, apparently its not the standard she is a customed to! Well tough!!
Ok fair she has a point we had to share the bed on the first night with 4 or 5 bugs which where under her pillow and in the sheets, some people would be happy for a free meal! But not jill, so she slept fully clothed just incase there where any more. Ok I admit so did I!
Luckily there was no one else staying at the place so at least it was fairly quite. We spent or first day in Punta Arenas sorting out a trip for the next day and a bus ticket to get to Puerto Natales our next stop. We struggled to find somewhere to eat and ended up in a local bakers eating empanada's which are basically cheese and ham pastys.
On Saturday we spent the morning doing the sights of Punta Arenas. This consisted of a look round the local cemetary with its perfectly manicured conifer trees and a walk along the sea front to see the tankers sailing off.
In the afternoon we headed out on our trip to the Isle de Magdallana, the home of 140,000 penguins. The trip there was a one and half hour boat ride across fairly calm seas. As we got near to the island we began to see the penguins swimming in the sea. We had to get to the island for around 6 as this is when they all return from the sea having spent the day out feeding on fish.
As we got off the boat and onto the island it was funny seeing the penguins trying to waddle across the rocky beach, they seemed to spend more time falling over onto their bellies than walking.
As we walked along the island the penguins began running in all different directions towards their nests, which where small holes in the ground. Baby ones were stood half covered in fluffy grey feathers, that they were starting to lose. It was quite literallly penguins as far as the eye could see. They all kept looking at us strangely bending their heads round in funny directions as they can only see sideways apparently.
The journey back to the mainland was nothing like the way out. The wind had started to howl and we were soon rocking up and down and side to side. The waves began crashing up and over the boat, we went out on to the deck to take a few photos but then had to battle against the wind to get back in side to safety. It was a good job we did as the waves just got bigger and bigger. Luckily for both of us there was no call for sick bags although I dont know how as the view out of the window kept changing from all sky to all sea as we rocked up and down.
Another night in the hostal and the following day we were off to Puerto Natales
