Visby on the island of Gotland, our first tropical island (sort of) 400 million years ago this island was on the equator and still has the remains of coral reefs under the sea. This journey took135 million years and continues to move slowly 15 cms a year to the North Pole. We are some 60/80 miles off the mainland in an area that is very prone to sea fogs. For us it's decision time, we either go NE towards Estonia or NW towards Stockholm. Sailing is all about time and weather, we have to be back to the yard in Germany by the end of August against the prevailing winds so we are already thinking about our return leg. Gotland is by far the most popular holiday destination in Sweden receiving almost one million visitors per year with over 7000 yachts visiting, it is also the sunniest area of Sweden. Visby is the main town and ferry port with a 3.5 km long city wall from the 13 th century and is a Unesco world heritage site. We have had three nights here enjoying there sunshine, unfortunately it looks like the weather is going to turn for the next week so our plans maybe changing. We met the crew of another UK flagged yacht in here today who are on a passage to Gibraltar from Stockholm, the skipper was Stokey Woodhall, a well known sailor who has spoken to our Henley sailing group on his sailing exploits. We are moving on in the morning, our destination to be decided, 1) another stop on the island in preparation to leave for Estonia
2) main land Sweden 60 NM away and the Swedish archipelago. Unless the weather changes by the morning I think we will find our landfall in Sweden as the weather does not look to be very good for the next week.
