As much as we were excited to be moving on to another tropical island in paradise, we were also sad to be leaving our new friends Rhys and Brittany as they were heading home the next day after their short holiday to Fiji. We had had such a lovely time together but it was time to move on. Naomi was joining us in our move onto Wayalailai island. We caught an Awesome Adventures ferry to Wayalailai which took around 2 and a half hours north from Bounty Island.
On arriving and meeting the family that ran the Naqalia Lodge, they were all so friendly and warm. They listed off the many activities we could take part in whilst staying on the island, there was lots to do. As we arrived on a Sunday, there were no activities that day due to their Christianity beliefs! We were taken to our bungalow for the two nights, called Garden View Bure. As there were three of us, it worked out cheaper to share a bungalow than to have 3 beds in the dormitory... happy days!
We sat on our balcony before they called us in for lunch. The food was incredible. All fresh and mostly home grown. We had potato wedges, salad, chicken, coleslaw and pineapple. The pineapple here was gorgeous, much sweeter than what we have a home. They advised us where to snorkel over dinner. Roco, the main guy for tourism advise, told us the dangerous fish and coral to look out for whilst snorkelling. Some of the stuff was quite intense. The worse thing that could happen to us is if we were bitten by a sea snake...a few had been noted in the area recently!
We waited until the tide was in at around 2pm to swim out to the best part of the coral reef. We saw lots of different types of fish, even a Moorish Idol fish which are my favourite so far. I was desperate to see a turtle or stingray but nothing yet!
That night after a delicious dinner, the family sang a song for us and taught us a Fijian dance. It was hilarious! We spent a good two hours listening to music and dancing around. Later that night, Roco introduced a small number of us to Kava which is a light brown root grown in Fiji and other parts of the South Pacific. You add the kava to water and gently sieve the water until all the kava has been removed and you're left with a light brown muddy looking water. In the ritual, on receiving a bowl of kava, you must first clap once and say "Bula" before taking the cup (usually half a coconut). Then the rest of the circle claps three times while you drink the whole bowl of Kava. Once you finish the bowl of kava, you then must clap three times. The kava leaves a tingling sensation in your mouth and leaves you feeling very relaxed and calm. I'm not actually sure if it's even classed as a drug?!
That night was probably the worst nights sleep I've ever had. The humidity was off the scale. We had a fan directly facing the double bed but it didn't help one bit. I tossed and turned in sweat all night, I've never known anything like it. At around 4am, a huge thunder storm hit the island and the heavy rain thrashing down on the metal roof didn't help my attempt to sleep either.
The next morning, we all overslept until 7.55am, meaning we had 5 minutes left of breakfast. We quickly jumped up and threw on some clothes. Luckily, one of the cooks Ellie had plated us up breakfast ready. She told us we had drunk too much kava the night before!
We spent the day chilling on our balcony, taking in the gorgeous views and easy way of life. I made a gorgeous shell bracelet and we had another little snorkel after lunch too. That late afternoon, we were taken over to another part of the island to a different resort where we were going to play a tournament against the other resort workers and guests to celebrate the New Year. For girls the game was Rugby and for boys Volleyball. Fijians celebrate the New Year for a whole week in which they also throw water at each other, it's quite amusing!
They asked for three girls to volunteer for the rugby game and told us it was touch rugby-not contact, so I volunteered. On arriving onto the pitch, we were then informed it was in fact a full contact game! Oh Lordy! The Fijian women on the other team were in the politest way... massive! I did not fancy my chances of being tackled by one of them at all. I was going to need to get my game face on and just give it everything I had. After a great game of 6 minutes each way, I had tackled two Fijian ladies to the floor, and we had won 3-1! I had such a good time I actually didn't want the game to be over, although I was totally out of breath!
Next, it was the boys turn. Matt had volunteered to get involved too. Their game of volleyball was pretty intense. Matt managed to score a couple of points which was awesome considering he had never played properly before! The boys from our resort also won the volleyball game too! We were cooking on gas!
After all the games had finished, we headed back to our resort by boat. The other resort was coming over to ours later that night for a big meal and party! Once back at Nagalia, we sat in a group of about 8 of us and chatted whilst drinking plenty Fiji Gold beers! The meal that night was huge with such a variety of amazing yummy food! The party was good fun too with lots of cheesy dance routines. We hit the hay a little earlier at around 10pm. All three of us were knackered, it's obviously hard work being on holiday.
