From being on the beautiful idyllic coast of Punta del Esta, to arrive in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay was a little disappointing to say the least, it seemed like just another built up, busy city centre. But our stay was only for 1 night so we weren't too bothered.
We went straight to Plaza Independencia to check our hostel out, which from the outside looked like a grand old building, however inside it was more like party central - the free beer on arrival, the excessively loud old Ibiza and Britney Spears tunes they were blasting out and the fact that the reception desk also doubled up as the bar rang alarm bells, we knew straight away that not much sleeping was going to be done here, so we took the motto, "if you can't beat them join them" and that we did until 5am the next morning.
The next morning the night before seemed like a very bad idea, as flash backs of embarrassing dance moves, exceedingly bad singing, and wrestling a stuffed toy crocodile came flooding back, and yet, it wasn't all bad as we met a really nice couple from London who we spent most of the night with drinking some extremely strong caprina`s and exchanging travelers stories.
After little sleep we decided to venture out and explore Montevideo in the little time we had before getting our next coach. Montevideo is famous for its market on Saturday mornings so we took a walk to see what it was all about. The market really was something quite special with local dancers, live bands, stalls of local handy crafts, BBQ counters with endless amounts of meat to indulge yourself on - it was a real atmosphere and almost worth visiting Montevideo just for this. Unfortunately we couldn't hang around here too long as we had yet another coach to take to our next stop…Colonial
