As we rocked up late afternoon after another bus journey, we found ourselves a little bit stuck. One we had no where to stay, two we had no idea where the hell we were, three there was no Tourist Office, four no one spoke English! And to top it off some weirdo would not leave us alone. With this concoction of things, we did become some what concerned and almost jumped on the next bus out of there, where ever that may have taken us!
With some rusty Spanish (in a Portuguese country) and the odd English word thrown in followed by an O ending.. i.e. Hotelo! A local managed to help us out and communicate with a taxi driver to take us to a hotel. As the hostels we phoned did not like the sound of my strung together sentences from the phrase book, and it turned out that most of them were closed anyway. Open season was still two weeks away...doh! Though we could see this from the ghost town that we entered before arriving at our hotel.
All be it, the hotel was ok and had a very nice sea view, we were still the only people staying in this large, empty, dark hotel. We ventured out that night to discover Laguna. Everything was fairly quiet, the odd person here and there, shops/restaurants closed, and the odd car/bike would pass every so often. After much time had passed of continuous walking we stumbled across a computer shop that had Internet Access. This is where we met our savior of Laguna. Someone who could finally understand what we were saying! I could have hugged him!
For our short two night stay in Laguna this guy (who ran the computer shop) done so much for us, we have to thank him! He told us where to see Dolphins and fisherman working together to catch fish on the beach, which was incredible, worth the trip alone to see this! He introduced us to Rodizio Pizza, which is known throughout all of Brazil. The idea is that you sit at your table and they just keep bringing different kinds of Pizza round and you just try which ones you want! And then at the end, out come the sweet Pizza's! Yep sweet Pizzas! Chocolate and banana, warm strawberry Jam and cream, fruit and green peppers (interesting). Maybe there is a niche for this back home, though the idea at first does sound a bit insane! The guy even took us to the bus station on our departure and booked us in a very dodgy hotel in our next step (we'll let you off for that one!)
The historical area is worth a visit to see the old colonial style buildings and we even stumbled across a bar called Big Ben. Unfortunatley we didn't hit Laguna in peak season, which was due to start the coming weekend with a huge bike feast! Sounds amazing but we needed to keep moving. Laguna is a peaceful coastal town (well, was while we were there) that is worth the trip just to see the Dolphins in the wild!
Next stop Porto Alegre, (hmmmmm only for one reason, to break our long haul bus journey between here and Uruguay!)
