Day 19: Time to hit the Road!
With the Giants winning Game 1 of the World Series overnight, San Francisco might have been smiling but the weather was miserable when we left this morning.
Rain and fog greeted us as we left our apartment and walked up a block to the Hertz office within the Westin St Francis Hotel to collect our rental car.
I google-mapped various ways of getting out of the city, but in the end I went for the most direct (and simplest) path - we pulled out of the hotel into the one way Geary St and let it take us in a straight line west, all the way until we hit the ocean.
Natural instinct at this point made me turn left and we found ourselves on our way heading south down the coastline.
We did spend the extra dollars to have a GPS in the car, however I now realise this was a waste of money as I married the ultimate navigation system (complete with iPad) which is unique in that it can give you both a bum steer and critique your driving performance at the same time!
A few hairy S-bends (which seemed to have a 'calming' / silencing effect on said navigation system) and it wasn't long before the skies cleared and we arrived at Santa Cruz where we had lunch on the wharf.
From there we only had to drive for another hour or so before we reached our destination of Monterey.
Very happy with our suite at the Victorian Inn here where we'll be spending the next two nights.
We're currently enjoying the free wine & cheese reception they put on for an hour every evening before we go out for dinner on Cannery Row.
P.S - Just got back from dinner at 'Fish Hopper'. Great place, we had a booth that looked right out over the bay. On a personal note, the prime rib & lobster tail I had gets the nod over the surf & turf at Arana Leagues any day.
