Hello everyone
We have made it into Chile via the 3 lakes crossing of the Andes from Bariloche in Argentina to Peurto Varas in Chile and boy did the weather change - we were sunbathing on the terrace overlooking some stunning mountain scenery one day and the next the first rains of the season with snow on the mountain tops appeared. As we headed up to cross the Andes the weather got colder and wetter and more dramatic. The actual mountain pass was through dense rainforest on a mountain track with some pretty scary hairpin bends - not that that made any difference to the speed of the driver! (close eyes and cross fingers!) The driver was trying to keep up with a european hare that had run onto the road in front of us! It just kept running in front of the vehicle for about 5 miles, every time the driver caught up it would speed off again, it was like a cartoon sketch and kept us all entertained. We spent the night at a place called Peulla and went horse trekking with some friends we met en route (David and Lesley from Caymen, neither of whom ride - they did very well as not easy going through rivers and forests) through the rivers and rainforest in the pouring rain wearing waterproof ponchos, really enjoyable - less clenching of thighs required! apparently it rains here nearly every day. The temperate rainforest was interesting from a botanical viewpoint with some amazing liverworts growing on the trees. We were very pleased to dry off by the roaring log fire on our return. Once through the Andes the rain stopped!
We then flew up to Santiago where we have hired a car and will spend the last 2 days in South America touring the wine growing distrct with some wine tasting of course.
Hope you all had a good Easter break. The internet connections are better here so will try and upload some photos.
Really enjoying reading your messages so keep them coming
Love
